Backstage News On Whether AEW And WBD’s Partnership Is Expected To Continue Once The Sale Is Finalized

Sean Ross Sapp discussed in the latest edition of Fightful Select Answers whether AEW's television broadcast partnership with Warner Bros. Discovery is likely to continue, especially if WBD eventually sells its cable assets. There have been rumors regarding the retention of the wrestling promotion's programming.

According to Sapp, since the proposed sales by Warner Bros. Discovery are unlikely to finalize before late 2026, AEW still has at least one guaranteed year left on its existing deal, along with an option year for extension. Sapp highlighted that this timeline creates a comfortable buffer for any potential buyer. If the new owners recognize AEW's value, they can opt to activate the extension year; if not, they have the flexibility to walk away without facing any penalties.

Sapp also pointed out that this structure is advantageous because AEW delivers reliable ratings at relatively low operating costs. Additionally, AEW covers its production costs, making wrestling content an appealing fit for cable networks, which increasingly seek consistent viewership without significant budgets.

Furthermore, Tony Khan, AEW's President and CEO, indicated that despite any changes in ownership, the combination of reliable audiences and cost control makes AEW an attractive programming choice. While there has been no formal comment from WBD regarding the long-term implications, Khan expressed optimism that the partnership would continue for at least another two years.
