Latest Backstage WWE News On Tonight's John Cena vs. Cody Rhodes Title Match

There is a hint of mystery in the air for tonight's WWE SummerSlam Night Two main event between Cody Rhodes and John Cena.

Fightfulselect.com is reporting that details regarding the match are being kept very quiet internally and that a number of writers and producers are being kept in the dark intentionally.

While Cena vs. Rhodes has been planned for months, the former's sudden face turn immediately before SummerSlam has caught people within WWE by surprise. During Cena's promo, it was also the first time that WWE even addressed the disappearance of both The Rock and Travis Scott, who were Cena allies during his initial heel turn. Scott was planned to do more with the company but it didn't happening with reports emerging that he and WWE had a major falling out causing creative to pretty much delete him from storylines.

It's unclear if Cena reverting to a babyface is the result of the Rock's absence over the last several months but as noted before, nobody had been informed that Rock would be back at SummerSlam though WWE has been a lot better lately of keeping their surprises from leaking out.

As for Cena, after tonight's SummerSlam, he has only a handful of dates left on his retirement tour (the fightful report states 9 but it could be as many as 12) and that would include a busy August and a few international dates. Cena is still planned for at least there PLE shows for the remainder of 2025 as well as his final, retirement match in December.
