WWE Tried to Bring Back Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson For This Year's Survivor Series

-- WWE had long considered trying to bring back Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson at this year’s Survivor Series as a way to celebrate the 25th anniversary of his WWE main promotion debut, at least the one that WWE pushed heavily, which took place at the 1996 iteration of the PPV. The Wrestling Observer Newsletter reports that WWE had discussed Johnson at Survivor Series for a “long time” but it fell through because of his prior commitments, specifically one that has him in Australia for filming of the second season of “Young Rock” on the day of the PPV. Because of quarantine requirements and regulations, it would be impossible for him to go back-and-forth between the two countries so he will remain in Australia until at least January. WWE had hoped that an appearance by Johnson would have boosted what has so far been slower-than-expected ticket sales for Survivor Series.

-- Despite this snag, WWE is still hoping to get Johnson back for a match at WrestleMania 39 - conveniently marketed as WrestleMania Hollywood - that will take place in 2023 in Inglewood, CA.
