WWE superstar Chelsea Green came under criticism this week for her comments on Hulk Hogan following the Hall of Famer's death.
Appearing on CBS News 24/7, Green said she would put Hogan's "polarizing political views aside" and spoke highly of her interactions with him:
"Polarizing political views aside, he was an absolute icon. And if it weren't for Hulk Hogan, there are many of us in the wrestling industry that would absolutely not be here. He inspired a massive generation. So it's a loss we are feeling deeply in the wrestling community."
"He showed up to Raw and Smackdown with an energy that truly was unmatched. And we actually just saw him at the Netflix premiere of Raw in January. He was very alive, very...just full of spirit and energy. That's the Hulk that I knew that I grew up with. My husband is a ride-or-die Hulk Hogan fan and so he's definitely feeling the loss today. I can only imagine that my co-workers are taking it very hard as well."
Her comments sparked a backlash among some fans who felt she was too dismissive about the darker parts of Hogan's wrestling career, including the racism scandal that ultimately had Hulk more or less blacklisted from WWE for a number of years before he was finally welcomed back. Green responded in a now deleted tweet addressing that criticism:
"A significant part of my role at @WWE involves engaging w the public & responding to questions, often on live platforms,” she wrote. “Yesterday, I was asked to comment on Hulk Hogan on live tv. Let me be clear: my stance on racism is unwavering. I do not condone it—period. If my response (or tweet) seemed dismissive of real concerns, I sincerely apologize. That was never my intention. I tried to acknowledge a death respectfully, even when the legacy is complicated. I am learning one day at a time and will continue to learn. ILY my PatriHOTS, President Chelsea."
However, Green tweeted again yesterday to indicate that she will be stepped away from social media as the backlash has escalated to the point where she has received death threats.
"I've tried to keep my page positive and comedic, but today, a lot changed… and it hit harder than I expected. The name calling, the death threats, the faceless accounts. Social media was supposed to be a fun place and it hasn’t been for a while. It’s been overwhelming and I need to step away for a little bit. Love my PatriHOTS! xo president chels."
