AEW Decides To Abandon Its Trademark On The Term "Shockwave"

As previously reported, AEW and the NWA have been in dispute over the term "Shockwave," which AEW attempted to trademark in September 2024. This issue arose because the NWA had already used the term for “NWA Shockwave” in December 2020.

According to WrestleNomics, AEW abandoned its trademark attempt last week, as indicated by documents filed with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). The abandonment was officially filed on November 13, and the trial and appeal board issued a judgment on November 17. This judgment was made with prejudice, meaning AEW cannot pursue the trademark in the future.

Both the NWA and AEW have National Championships, with AEW officially introducing its championship at Full Gear when Ricochet won the title. The NWA has reportedly advised its talent to minimize criticism of AEW's version.

In an interview with Ariel Helwani, Tony Khan mentioned that he was "probably not" going to use the name Shockwave and that he had discussions with Billy Corgan about it.
