Alberto El Patron has proven over the years to be one of wrestling's most polarizing figures, involving himself in several incident both in and out of the ring. He has been on the outs with WWE for a number of years and with the company purchasing AAA, it effectively spelled the end of his tenure there as well.
El Patron - who was known as Alberto Del Rio in WWE - lost a match to El Mesias on Friday in a bout with the stipulation that if Alberto lost, he would be forced to leave AAA. This comes on the heels of Alberto suddenly dropping the AAA Mega Championship to El Hijo del Vikingo very soon after WWE acquired AAA. It has been a major fall for Alberto, who was one of AAA's top stars as recently as early 2025 and the actions have made it clear that WWE really wants nothing to do with him.
In the recent past, El Patron has claimed that WWE has been interested in bringing him back, even going so far as stating to other AAA wrestlers that the company was looking at having him return at the Royal Rumble. Despite this, WWE sources have adamantly stated that they have no interest in Alberto and one source told fightfulselect.com that "if we wanted Alberto at all, much less in the Royal Rumble, he'd be here" while re-iterating that they have not heard of any change to WWE's opinion of the wrestler. The source also pointed out that WWE has clearly kept Alberto off any AAA promotional material and worked behind the scenes to get the AAA Mega Title off of him as soon as possible, even at the cost of eliciting backlash from fans in Mexico in giving the belt to Vikingo.
Other sources have indicated that there remains no plans for Del Rio in WWE and that they believe he is done in AAA as well (rather than the leaving AAA stipulation being a storyline), however, they feel that he will make attempts to return to both companies in the future.
El Patron also has had a tumultuous history with current WWE Chief Content Officer Paul Levesque, taking personal digs at him in interviews over the years before publicly apologizing, all of which no doubt severely damaged his chances of trying to get back in with the promotion.
