As many fans are already aware, WWE legend AJ Styles lost to GUNTHER at the 2026 WWE Royal Rumble premium live event (PLE). The match had a stipulation that required Styles to retire from wrestling if he lost. After the match, Styles sparked speculation about a possible return when he teased removing his gloves but ultimately left them on and mentioned the phrase "never say never" during an appearance on Stephanie McMahon’s podcast. However, he clarified, “I’m not saying that I’ll do it anytime soon.”
According to PWInsider.com, Styles and WWE had been in discussions regarding a new contract. As the Royal Rumble approached without a deal in place, it was decided to proceed with the Styles vs. GUNTHER match. Styles reportedly chose to end his wrestling career at the Royal Rumble, as it marked the 10-year anniversary of his debut at the same event.
The report also indicated that Styles and WWE are still in talks about his future, but there has been no confirmation of a new deal being signed yet. WWE Chief Content Officer Paul "Triple H" Levesque expressed hope that Styles would remain involved in a behind-the-scenes role. While Styles would have the opportunity to explore other options if his contract expires and he becomes a free agent, there are no indications that he plans to return to the ring in the near future.
