During last Friday's post-WWE Saturday Night's Main Event episode of SmackDown, General Manager Nick Aldis suspended Drew McIntyre after he attacked Undisputed WWE Champion "The American Nightmare" Cody Rhodes and a referee before the show concluded.
Dave Meltzer revealed on the latest Wrestling Observer Radio that McIntyre's suspension was a way to write him off TV so he can film a role in the upcoming Highlander remake alongside Henry Cavill. McIntyre is set to play Angus MacLeod, the brother of Cavill’s character.
However, PWInsider.com is refuting that story, stating that WWE creative sources have indicated that the suspension is simply part of McIntyre’s current storyline and that there’s “nothing beyond that” regarding his suspension.
This news comes after Deadline reported in September that Cavill was injured during pre-production training for the film. The injury delayed the start of principal photography, which is now expected to begin in early 2026. Chad Stahelski will direct the film, which also stars Russell Crowe, Marisa Abela, Karen Gillan, Djimon Hounsou, Max Zhang, and former WWE Superstar Dave Bautista (Batista). The script is written by Michael Finch.
As of now, there is no information on when McIntyre will take time off from WWE TV to film Highlander. If the production delay is accurate, it suggests that McIntyre won’t be leaving WWE programming anytime soon, despite the recent suspension angle.
