Backstage News On Internal WWE Reaction To Brock Lesnar Hinting At Retirement

Multi-time WWE champion Brock Lesnar came out on the losing end of his match at WrestleMania 42, falling to Oba Femi in relatively short order. The result itself wasn't exactly surprising but Lesnar's actions after the match definitely were when he placed his gloves and boot in the ring and embraced Paul Heyman, seemingly to indicate that it was his last match.

On the latest Wrestling Observer Radio, hosts Dave Meltzer and Bryan Alvarez discussed the situation with Meltzer stating that within WWE circles, many people don't believe that he Lesnar is retiring "yet" though they believe it will happen at some point this year. He added that there seems to be an aura of uncertainty as sources within WWE are keeping quiet (like they did on the Seth Rollins injury angle) so nobody really knows for sure.

Meltzer then added that WWE's original plans weren't for Lesnar and Oba Femi to have a "one and done" match but at some point a multi-match program was dropped and the creative decision was made to do a match similar to how Goldberg squashed Lesnar several years back.

Alvarez added that he felt it was odd how Lesnar threw up an "X" to the audience after the WrestleMania match as well as how overly emotional Heyman was during his promo on Monday's Raw. He also felt that the tribute video that WWE aired on the show felt like it was thrown together, suggesting that perhaps Lesnar's actions of leaving his gear in the ring caught everyone off guard.

WWE CCO Triple H spoke following WrestleMania and also seemed to imply that Lesnar's decision to leave his boots and gloves in the ring was not something that he planned out earlier but only came about after he got beat badly by Femi, though it's fair to wonder whether he was simply commenting on in from a storyline perspective.

The report mentioned that Paul Heyman owes Gunther a favor for taking on Seth Rollins at WrestleMania 42 and it was believed that the favor would lead to a Gunther-Lesnar match at SummerSlam (in Lesnar's home state, Minnesota) where many expected Lesnar to hang up his boots. However, Gunther refrained from discussion that development and instead looks to be embarking on a feud with LA Knight for the time being.
