Backstage News on WWE, IMPACT Reaction to CM Punk Leaving AEW; More on His Termination

-- CM Punk was terminated with cause from AEW last week, fueling speculation on what his next move will be and specifically whether a reunion with WWE may be in the cards. Punk's status with an "immediate topic of discussion" within WWE according to pwinsiderelite.com with some people adamant against the idea of bringing him back, believing that it couldn't happen. Others, however, looked at it as an opportunity to make some "big money" and the report adds that at least one top tier star was "all for it" though obviously it wouldn't be his call at all on whether Punk returns to WWE or not.

-- As for WWE officials go, there has been no discussion or thoughts yet about pursuing Punk as executives are fully locked in on the Endeavor merger, which is expected to finalize this month, before they can even consider any significant signings. Some within WWE have pointed out that the call on whether to bring Punk in or not would fall on Endeavor and Punk did have a good relationship with that entity from his UFC days. It was also noted that Vince McMahon has previously gone on record to state that he has worked with talent who were at significant odds with WWE at some point and that he hoped that the opportunity to reconcile with Punk would come up in the future.

-- Punk and Paul Levesque did speak very briefly when the former showed up backstage at Raw earlier this year and an obvious date that many people are circling is Survivor Series in November which will take place in Punk's hometown of Chicago. If WWE and Punk do come to an agreement to return, the pwinsider report cautioned that a full-time schedule is unlikely but having him work some big matches would certainly be possible.

-- IMPACT Wrestling is another promotion who is said to be "super excited" at the prospects of possibly having Punk work for them but it's unclear if that would be a realistic long-term option. New Japan Pro Wrestling, due to their ties with AEW and Tony Khan, would be a very unlikely destination for Punk while any indie promotion would surely not have the financial backing to hire Punk, not that he would even want to pursue that unless it was something he wanted to do for fun.

-- With Punk being terminated from his AEW contract "with cause", there is a strong belief that he would not have any sort of non-compete clause attached to his departure so he could conceivably show up for any wrestling promotion immediately. At this point though, it's not clear if Punk even wants to explore any wrestling opportunities.
