Backstage News On WWE’s Plans For GUNTHER At WrestleMania 42 And His Potential Opponents

Former WWE World Heavyweight Champion GUNTHER has been on a remarkable winning streak recently. Last December, during the WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event special, he submitted 17-time World Champion John Cena in what was Cena’s last match. At the 2026 WWE Royal Rumble PLE on January 31st, GUNTHER also defeated AJ Styles, resulting in Styles being forced to retire from the ring. This past Monday night on WWE RAW, GUNTHER continued his success by defeating Styles’ former tag team partner, Dragon Lee. However, it appears that WWE currently does not have a concrete plan for GUNTHER at WrestleMania 42.

According to a report by WrestleVotes Radio on Fightful Select, WWE’s plans for GUNTHER at WrestleMania 42 are still “undetermined,” and they are uncertain about the direction they will take. WrestleVotes Radio mentioned that the three most likely opponents for GUNTHER at WrestleMania 42 are Brock Lesnar, Oba Femi, and Rey Mysterio, especially considering GUNTHER’s recent interactions with Dragon Lee. Meanwhile, Lesnar has publicly made an open challenge for WrestleMania 42, which has yet to be answered.

Additionally, it was reported in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter last month that WWE’s internal plans for WrestleMania 42 included a matchup featuring Brock Lesnar against LA Knight, though this match has not been confirmed.

As of now, it remains unclear who the former World Heavyweight Champion will face, if anyone, at WrestleMania 42 next month. WrestleMania 42 is scheduled to take place on Saturday, April 18th, and Sunday, April 19th, at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada. Both nights will be broadcast live on the ESPN App in the U.S. and on Netflix internationally.
