During Night One of the WrestleMania Pre-Show, WWE Hall of Famer JBL gave his take on the main event matchup between Bianca Belair and Sasha Banks, for the Smackdown Women’s Championship. JBL made a few comments about the match, before stating that it “isn’t about women’s history, or black history”.
Another WWE Hall of Famer was also on the pre-show panel, and he took to his own Hall of Fame podcast to talk about it. Booker T explained to listeners:
"And JBL said that-that wasn’t Black history, it was just history and I didn’t — it wasn’t the right time. It was Black history as far as I’m concerned because the last time two African-Americans stood in the ring in the main event in that company was 20 years ago and it was me and The Rock at SummerSlam. So it was 20 years ago, two African-Americans stood across the ring from each other and combated with each other so it was Black history and I’ll correct JBL on that at another time."
Sasha Banks and Bianca Belair are the first pair of African-American athletes to main event a WWE Pay Per View together. The last two Superstars to achieve top of the card status were Booker T, and The Rock, who competed at Summerslam 2001.
