Reigning WWE NXT North American Champion Carmelo Hayes has beaten a number of top WWE NXT Stars since winning the WWE NXT North American Championship for the first time on the October 12, 2021 episode of WWE NXT 2.0, when he successfully cashed in his Breakout Tournament contract on former WWE NXT talent Isaiah "Swerve" Scott.
Carmelo has since defeated stars such as Johnny Gargano, Pete Dunne, Roderick Strong, Cameron Grimes, Tony D'Angelo and Grayson Waller. The NXT North American Champion took to his Twitter and noted he is in need of an opponent for this Sunday’s WWE NXT Worlds Collide Event. A fan responded to the WWE NXT North American Champion and suggest former NXT Star Velveteen Dream (Patrick Clark) as his opponent.
Hayes would then respond to the fan and write, "Hell na" Velveteen Dream has been wanting to make his return to WWE for a little while now as he has been posting a number of stuff on social media to show his interest in returning to the company. Velveteen Dream was released by the WWE last year as he was accused of sending explicit photos to minors in 2020 and despite admitting those photos were his, the former WWE NXT Star claimed he was hacked.
