Cody Rhodes Teases Changing WWE Universal Championship Back To Classic Winged-Eagle Title Belt

Could the famous "winged eagle" WWE Championship be returning as the new WWE Universal Championship belt?

It sounds like that's what "The American Nightmare" would like to see happen.

Following the memorable finish to his "story" by capturing the WWE Universal Championship in one of the biggest feel-good moments in all of WWE and WrestleMania history at WrestleMania XL Night 2 on Sunday night at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, PA., Cody Rhodes started this week off with his new championship-level media obligations.

In addition to appearing on "The TODAY Show" this morning for his first television interview as the brand new WWE Universal Champion, Cody Rhodes also stopped by The Pat McAfee Show at WWE World at the Pennsylvania Convention Center on Monday afternoon.

During his sit-down discussion with one-half of the weekly commentary team for WWE Monday Night Raw on the live ESPN podcast, Rhodes spoke to McAfee about his interest in changing the title belt he has right now to one from WWE's past, the "winged eagle" title belt that Hulk Hogan held for so many years, as well as other WWE legends such as Bret Hart, Shawn Michaels and "Stone Cold" Steve Austin.

"I think we should probably just come right out with it," Rhodes said. "This (the current WWE title belt) is what I got in the ring so there’s a level of specialness to this, equity that’s been put into it, that I have a warm feeling about so I feel differently about it today. However, that said, I had changed a title previously in the past. I am not in charge of anything, I am no longer an EVP, I have no stroke other than the fact that I’m the champion but I just think it would be special perhaps to see a particular championship, one that I grew up on."

Rhodes continued, "Again, I’m not in charge of anything. Triple H is in charge of things but you guys are damn right, the winged eagle. If it doesn’t happen, just don’t get mad at me, okay? I’ll do what I did the last time, I’m going to try my best so thank you, guys."
