Friday Night SmackDown Quick Recap for August 12, 2022

Matches Tonight: Four (approx. 38 minutes)
  • WWE Women's Tag Team Championship Tournament, Round One Match: Raquel Rodriguez & Aliyah vs Xia Li & Shotzi. The advancing duo faces the winners of Natalya & Sonya Deville vs Nikkita Lyons & Zoey Stark next week on Raw! Solid match that saw Xia Li & Shotzi dominate for the bulk of the match until a hot Raquel Rodriguez tag gave the faces the offensive backup to win. 8:02-8:15pm EST.
  • Tag Team Match: Brandon Scott & Trevor Urban vs Hit Row. B-Fab, Top Dolla (AJ Francis) and Ashanti "Thee" Adonis have returned as "the OG-3" of Hit Row and picked up the easy squash victory over local talent. 8:45-8:48pm EST.
  • Tag Team Match: Drew McIntyre & Madcap Moss vs the Undisputed WWE Tag Team Champions the Usos. McIntyre and Moss picked up the win. 9:14-9:23pm EST.
  • Intercontinental Championship Main Event Match: Gunther(c) w/ Ludwig Kaiser vs Shinsuke Nakamura. Fantastic match that got the crowd hotly involved; Gunther retained, barely. Worth watching. 9:43-9:57pm EST.
Miscellaneous Non-Match Segments of Note:
  • Drew McIntyre/Kross & Scarlett/the Usos: McIntyre started a promo, addressing the attack he suffered at the hands of a returning Karrion Kross last week. Scarlett made her way out, distracting him and allowing the Usos to double-team McIntyre, leaving the challenger laid out. 8:26-8:32pm EST.
  • Intercontinental Championship Prestige Video: Just like Raw did on Monday with the United States Championship, tonight featured a video package highlighting the very prestigious history of the Intercontinental Championship. The narrator really helps build up to a "big-fight" feel as we see clips covering every major champion and event, including the champion-versus-champion WrestleMania VI main event. Very well done--expect the US and IC titles to actually be worth something for the first time in decades!
  • Non-Match: Kofi Kingston was set to take on Ivar of the Viking Raiders. Kofi attempted to attack the duo with a kendo stick prior to the match, leading to a two-on-one beatdown that saw Kofi unable to perform for the match; no bell, it never started and never will.
  • SmackDown Women's Championship Contract Signing: Am I right in postulating that this is the first official Triple H-era contract signing? (Well, I wrote that four hours before airtime. Now, after watching, survey says...) Who did what, blah blah. Ronda Rousey factored in, showing up prior to the segment to pay her fine in cash (dumped on a table). Baszler and Morgan exchanged words; Morgan insulted Baszler, leading to Baszler to attack her and target the injured left arm still in a brace. 8:59-9:05pm EST.
  • WWE Women's Tag Team Championship Tournament Update: Raquel Rodriguez & Aliyah advanced tonight and will face the winner of Raw's first-round match between NXT's Nikkita Lyons & Zoey Stark and the team of Natalya & Shayna Baszler. Having previously advanced is the team of Dakota Kai & Iyo Sky who, having defeated Dana Brooke & Tamina previously on Raw, will face the winner of the upcoming Nikki A.S.H. & Doudrop vs Alexa Bliss & Asuka first-round match.
