Friday Night SmackDown Quick Recap for August 5, 2022

  • Singles Match: Ricochet vs Happy Corbin. A solid match that saw Corbin lose after McAfee distracted him. 8:13-8:24pm EST.
  • Singles Contender's Match: Shinsuke Nakamura vs Ludwig Kaiser. If Nakamura wins, the King of Strong Style will earn a shot at Gunther's Intercontinental Championship. Another solid match that saw Nakamura win. Nakamura will face Gunther next week for the IC title. 8:40-8:49pm EST.
  • Contender's Gauntlet Match: Raquel Rodriguez, Natalya, Xia Li, Aliyah, Shotzi, Sonya Deville & Shayna Baszler. The winner will challenge Liv Morgan for her SmackDown Women's Championship at Clash at the Castle. We started with Aliyah and Sonya Deville at 9:04pm. Aliyah was eliminated at 9:06 and replaced by Raquel Rodriguez. Sonya Deville was eliminated by Raquel at 9:09pm and replaced by Shotzi. Shotzi was eliminated at 9:14pm and replaced by Xia Li. Xia Li was eliminated at 9:17pm and replaced by Natalya. Natalya was eliminated at 9:20pm and replaced by our final entrant, Shayna Baszler. Raquel Rodriguez was eliminated at 9:27pm, making Shayna Baszler the new contender. 9:04-9:27pm EST.
  • Tag Team Squash Match: the Viking Raiders vs Tommy Gibson & Jim Moke. You can figure out who squashed who, I believe in you. 9:33-9:34pm EST.
  • Singles Main Event Match: Kofi Kingston vs Erik w/ Ivar. Kofi picked up the win. 9:39-9:43pm EST.
Miscellaneous Non-Match Segments of Note:
  • The First 12 Minutes: Nothing but SummerSlam recaps and a funny Pat McAfee rant/Telestrator, off-script segment. 8:00-8:12pm EST.
  • Liv Morgan Promo: The champ addressed the controversial finish to SummerSlam's title match, that saw Morgan tap out at 2 as the ref--who failed to notice it--counted 3. Liv claimed she only tapped out after she thought the ref counted three. There were a lot of pro-Morgan chants throughout the night, but during this segment there was a lot of heat on Morgan--some in-house, some digital crowd (piped in). 9:00-9:02pm EST.
  • Roman Reigns Addresses Drew McIntyre: Roman's entrance began at 9:45pm. We actually began the segment (ie, talking) at 9:54pm--over eight minutes that the audience sat there staring at the Bloodline. Roman stated that Heyman is out indefinitely after Brock Lesnar tried to "kill" Heyman. Drew McIntyre came out to confront Roman but was savagely beaten by a returning Karrion Kross--with Scarlett! 9:45-9:59pm EST.
  • WWE Women's Tag Team Championship Tournament: It begins on Raw!
  • WWE Clash at the Castle, Current Card: Drew McIntyre challenges Roman Reigns for his WWE Undisputed Universal Championship. Shayna Baszler challenges Liv Morgan for her SmackDown Women's Championship.
  • Next Week on SmackDown: Shinsuke Nakamura vs Gunther for the Intercontinental Championship.
  • Next Week on Raw: Ciampa vs Bobby Lashley for the United States Championship. The Women's Tag Team Championship Tournament begins.
  • Surprise Returns: If you missed it above, two-time NXT Champion Karrion Kross returned to SmackDown tonight with Scarlett and put Roman Reigns on notice that Doomsday is coming.
