Jeff Hardy Wins Intercontinental Championship Match

During the August 21, 2020 edition of WWE Friday Night SmackDown, Jeff Hardy went head-to-head with WWE Intercontinental Champion AJ Styles in a title match-up.

Earlier in the evening, during the opening of SmackDown's first edition in the Thunderdome, the Retribution team had made an appearance as they attempted to gain control of the Thunderdome and attack Braun Strowman who was left alone in the ring after The Fiend's flash exit. Almost the entire roster ran down from the locker room to assist Braun Strowman, including both Jeff Hardy and AJ Styles.

Hardy was originally thought to have been injured by one of the members of Retribution, however upon a video replay of the events, it was seen that Styles was not only the one who attacked Hardy, but it was deliberate.

Throughout SmackDown we were sent back and forth from Hardy and the WWE medic who finally told Hardy he would clear him to fight if Hardy was willing to deal with the pain. Hardy agreed, stating he needed to be in this match.

AJ Styles vs. Jeff Hardy for the Intercontinental Title started off with Styles focusing on Hardy's injured leg. Hardy was able to gain control of the match and with a Twist of Fate followed up with a Swanton, Hardy got the cover and the three count for the three count pin and win as the NEW Intercontinental Champion!
