Welcome, boys and girls, to another episode of the Lawcast! This week we're kicking off a new winter tradition, as we begin our Starrcade series with WCW Starrcade 1988. We chose to begin there, rather than with the actual first Starrcade, so we could tell the story of WCW through these 12 PPVs, and see how this company rapidly, and chaotically, shifts from year to year. We're covering 88 and 89 this year, and we'll pick up where we leave off next year!
Now let's focus on this show, and all of the bizarre 80s NWA staples that makes it so special. From Dusty Rhodes' passive aggressive booking, to Ric Flair doing Ric Flair things, on down to the showdown between Jim Cornette and Paul Heyman. This show has a lot of good and a lot of bad, and the most praise is directed at *checks notes* LEX LUGER?!
Hey guys! If you haven't joined our the Lawcast Patreon yet, here's a look at what's new:
We now have FIVE bonus episodes available to our donors, including a look at the rarely seen original pilot of Smackdown, an episode of So You Think You Can? where Steve is forced to try to fix the many, many issues with Starrcade 97, and we just released an episode of The 90s Sports podcast, something that started as a joke, but that people actually gave us money because they wanted to listen to it. You guys are weird and we love you. We also have an episode where Cewsh takes his turn in the booking chair and will try to fix the calamitous mess of ECW December to Dismember. Our newest episode is a recap of the past decade in wrestling, with a focus on the big picture stuff. How did WWE go from a monopoly to having actual competition? What sparked the women's revolution? What caused New Japan to become the freight train it is today? And what does the next decade hold in store?
Think of it as hiring us for a job where you only pay us $2.50 an hour. I'm pretty sure that's not even legal, but we'll just keep it between us.
Also, we have finally found a way to meet the request that we get the most often, and we finally now have a full archive for the Lawcast where you can go and listen to us talk about Sid for nearly 100 episodes. In the future we'll have playlists up there to make it easier to navigate, but for now we've got the whole deal there for the taking. Enjoy!
