New IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Champion Crowned At NJPW Castle Attack, Huge Match Announced

As previously reported, NJPW announced that the former IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Champion Hiromu Takahashi will be out of action for six months due to him suffering a torn left pectoral injury. Hiromu was set to defend his IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Championship against El Phantasmo at Sunday's Castle Attack Event, but NJPW announced that the IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Title Match on Sunday would see El Phantasmo take on BUSHI and El Desperado in a Three-Way Match for the vacant title.

El Desperado, who is also one half of the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Champions, came out of the match with a huge victory and walked out as the brand-new IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Champion. Later in the night, the main event saw IWGP Intercontinental Champion Kota Ibushi retain his title against Tetsuya Naito.

Immediately following the main event, the brand-new IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Champion made his way out to the ring and it was made official that he will face IWGP Intercontinental Champion Kota Ibushi at the company's 49th Anniversary Show this coming Thursday for both the titles hanging in the balance.

Typically, this show would see the IWGP Intercontinental Champion taking on the Heavyweight Champion, but since Kota Ibushi holds both the titles, things had to be slightly altered this year.
