According to Dave Meltzer on a recent edition of the Wrestling Observer Radio Program, the folks from AXS TV wanted to bring NJPW back on the channel, but NJPW turned them down. Even though AXS wanted to bring NJPW back, NJPW felt that it was better to go with the Roku Channel instead, which the Japanese promotion recently announced the partnership of. The announcement comes after NJPW’s TV deal with AXS expired back in 2019.
Meltzer also noted that NJPW's partnership with Roku is a strategic move to land a bigger deal in the future. Meltzer then said that NJPW wants to be on something bigger than AXS, and they would have had to sign an exclusive deal with AXS, but their partnership with Roku isn't exclusive, which means that they can seek out other partnerships.
NJPW premiered on the Roku Channel this past week, with brand-new episodes airing every Thursday at 5 PM and replays are reportedly available on-demand immediately after.
