The first NXT special of the new year was announced during the final NXT TakeOver live special event of 2020 on Sunday evening.
During the NXT TakeOver: WarGames live special event on the WWE Network from Capitol Wrestling Center in Orlando, Florida on Sunday night, December 6, 2020, the company released a trailer promoting the next black-and-gold brand special.
Scheduled as the first NXT special event of 2021, WWE announced that NXT: New Year's Evil will go down from the Capitol Wrestling Center in Orlando, FL. on Wednesday, January 6, 2021, airing live and free via the USA Network in the regular weekly NXT On USA time slot.
WWE.com released the following announcement after premiering the trailer during the NXT TakeOver: WarGames 2020 live special event.
