NXT TAKEOVER: WARGAMES RESULTS (11/23/2019)
Welcome to our live results of the NXT TakeOver: WarGames 2019 live special from Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Illinois. Our play-by-play coverage will begin with the "Kickoff Show" pre-show, which streams LIVE on WWE Network, as well as WWE's various social media channels, starting at 6:30pm EST / 3:30pm PST.
NXT TAKEOVER: WARGAMES 2019 KICKOFF SHOW
Charly Caruso, Pat McAfee and Sam Roberts telling the fans to prepare for WarGames tonight, as she welcomes the house audience and viewing audience at home via WWE Network to NXT TakeOver: WarGames inside Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Illinois.
From there, we see the trio standing at the top of the entrance stage as they introduce a video package showing Mia Yim getting attacked backstage ahead of tonight's Women's WarGames match. That leads to a discussion about the Team Baszler vs. Team Ripley showdown scheduled for tonight's show, which we're told will open up the live special, as the Women's WarGames match will be the first to air on the NXT TakeOver: WarGames main show.
After that, the trio moves on to run down some of the other matches scheduled for tonight's show, with them playing to the crowd inside the arena in Rosemont and introducing some video packages. They also tease having big news for the pre-show, including an update on who the mystery team member will be on Team Ciampa.
Isaiah "Swerve" Scott vs. Angel Garza
Then they introduce a live match on the NXT TakeOver: WarGames 2019 Kickoff Show, which leads to Isaiah "Swerve" Scott's theme hits and he makes his way out to the ring for his pre-show match against Angel Garza.
Scott makes his way down to the ring as Mauro Ranallo, Nigel McGuinness and Beth Phoenix take over on commentary as we see our first shot of the announce trio seated at the desk at ringside. From there, Angel Garza's theme hits and he makes his ring entrance.
The bell sounds and Scott and Garza immediately go at it. Early on, Scott's quickness keeps him looking stylish, however it isn't long before Garza shows some of the most beautiful offense in the world at Scott's expense, as McGuinness points out on commentary.
A double-underhook into a power bomb leads to a near fall for "Swerve" Scott, who turns the offensive tide in the contest as the crowd starts to come alive. The trade chops now as the fans respond with the approrpiate "WOOOOO's!" A crazy back-and-forth body-bouncing off the ropes into a flipping power bomb pin attempt almost steals the match out nowhere for Garza, however Scott managed to kick out at two.
After a failed super-something-attempt off the top rope, Scott knocks Garza to the floor and flies out on him. The fans chant "You Got Swerved! You Got Swerved!" as the action returns to the ring. Scott with another near fall after a big spot. Garza backs Scott into the corner, taking out the ref in the process. Scott blocks a low-blow attempt from Garza, but Garza locks him in and blasts him with the Wing Clipper for the win.
Winner: Angel Garza
Mia Yim Out, Dakota Kai In For Women's WarGames Match Tonight
After the match, we see some more video packages promoting matches on the main card scheduled for tonight. From there, the Kickoff Show trio of McAfee, Roberts and Caruso kick things to a backstage segment.
Out in the parking lot, we see Mia Yim being stretchered into an ambulance as Rhea Ripley, William Regal and others look on. Regal tells Ripley she's the Team Captain for tonight and asks what she's going to do.
Dakota Kai, who is also standing around watching, is told by Ripley, "You're in." Kai hesitates at first, but eventually agrees to jump in on short-notice in the Women's WarGames Match at NXT TakeOver: WarGames later tonight.
The Final Member Of Team Ciampa For Men's WarGames Match Tonight
We shoot to a video package for the Men's WarGames match tonight, with Team Ciampa vs. Team Undisputed ERA.
Caruso shows the tweet posted by Ciampa teasing a potential fourth team member for the Men's WarGames Match tonight. As the music starts playing to wrap up the show, we are told that the fourth member of Team Ciampa is, in fact, in the building.
As the music plays, Pat McAfee says he is not the fourth team member, but continues to cut a promo to wrap things up regardless. Here we go folks! NXT TakeOver: WarGames 2019 starts now!
NXT TAKEOVER: WARGAMES 2019
The NXT TakeOver: WarGames 2019 live special kicks off the main show with the WWE FOREVER signature airing, leading into the real video package opener for tonight's big event, which is narrated by WWE Hall Of Famer Shawn Michaels. He closes by saying, "it's time for war!"
From there, Mauro Ranallo welcomes us live inside Allstate Arena as we shoot to the announce team for tonight's show, which includes Ranallo, Nigel McGuinness and Beth Phoenix. They kick it to the Spanish announce team.
Women's WarGames Match
* Team Ripley (Rhea Ripley, Candice LeRae, Tegan Nox & Dakota Kai) vs. Team Baszler (Shayna Baszler, Io Shirai, Bianca Belair & Kay Lee Ray)Then the lights in the arena go out and a siren sounds as the WarGames cage is lowered over the ring. Remember, Team Baszler has the team advantage in this WarGames showdown. With that said, the ring announcer runs down the rules for the match.
From there, Rhea Ripley's music hits and out comes the Team Captain for Team Ripley. From there, the three members of her team -- Bianca Belair, Candice LeRae and Dakota Kai -- make their way down to the ring.
The lights go out again and out come the members of Team Baszler, the last of which was the actual Team Captain herself -- NXT Women's Champion "The Queen of Spades" Shayna Baszler.
Starting things off for their respective teams are Io Shirai and Candice LeRae. The two immediately go at it, charging at each other and trading punches back-and-forth Frye-Takayama PRIDE FC-style. Now they start to utilize the double-ring setup, as they hit running moves from one ring to the other.
The clock runs out and in comes Bianca Belair for Team Baszler, giving the heel team an early two-on-one advantage for the next five minutes.
As you would expect, the two-on-one factor played out for the majority of the five minutes, with LeRae getting punished -- mostly by the fresh Belair -- with crushing offense, getting smashed against the cage in the process.
The clock finally winds down, although even after the buzzer goes off the referee has issues unlocking the cage to let the next member of Team Ripley out to enter the WarGames battle.
With that said, Rhea Ripley herself emerges and charges towards the ring with a purpose. She grabs some trash cans, a kendo stick and steel chairs from under the ring before finally entering. The crowd chanted "We Want Tables!" but apparently it wasn't in the script, so no dice.
Ripley finally enters the ring and slams Belair onto a trash can ribs first. The offensive advantage remains on the side of Team Ripley as LeRae is back on her feet and both she and Ripley are firmly in control now.
With that said, the clock winds down and out comes Kay Lee Ray. She runs down and grabs some more chairs and trash cans and throws them in the ring. She grabs a table for a second to tease the fans, but puts it back. Maybe it just got added to the script after all!
In the ring, Kay Lee Ray finally enters and the three-on-two team advantage starts to play out as Team Ripley begins taking things over. As LeRae and Ripley go up for a double super-plex on Belair, Kay Lee Ray runs over and breaks things up. Now all the members in the ring stack up on the top ropes until Ripley comes over and blasts everyone with a Tower of Doom superplex spot on a pile of steel chairs. Belair follows up with a 450 off the top onto all the women laying in the chair pile.
This runs out the five minute clock again and now Dakota Kai emerges. Before she goes to the ring, she stops, turns and runs back, blasting Tegan Nox with a big running boot to the face.
Now things get vicious. She kicks and stomps her over and over again before putting her head in the cage that members are held in before entering WarGames. She slams that cage door on her head over-and-over-and-over-and-over again and she screams in rage. She pounds away at the injured knee of Nox and takes the brace off, beating on it some more. She even takes a swipe at NXT General Manager William Regal and NXT officials.
It looks like order is finally restored when Kai comes running back at Nox and beating on her injured knee some more. We see the shocked faces of everyone inside the WarGames cage right now as Kai appears to finally be taken to the back. The clock runs down again literally seconds later.
This leaves only Shayna Baszler to be unlocked from the holding cage. She comes out with a big smile on her face, skipping and doing a counting gesture with her hands to show the extreme numbers advantage that Team Baszler appears to have as the Women's WarGames match continues.
Mauro Ranallo informs us that WarGames has officially started now that Kai has been taken to the back and Nox has been deemed medically unfit to compete. WarGames is officially under way now with a 4-to-2 advantage for Team Baszler.
If that weren't enough, "The Queen of Spades" pulls out some handcuffs. She puts one on the other Team Captain, Rhea Ripley. As she goes to hook the other one to one of the ring ropes, Candice LeRae runs over and stops her. LeRae and Ripley, the only remaining members of their team, start fighting away now at the four members they are stuck in this double-cage with.
Shirai climbs all the way to the absolute top of the WarGames cage and leaps off with a crazy moonsault, taking out everyone below. The fans respond by chanting "Mama Mia! Mama Mia!"
Ripley blasts Kay Lee Ray, but leaves herself open for Shayna Baszler to jump on her back with her choke submission finisher. The fans explode now as Baszler switches arms and squeezes down hard on the choke. Ripley tries hand-fighting her way out. No, she actually just handcuffed herself to Baszler.
She stands up now as Baszler stares at her in shock. Ripley kicks and hits the Rip-Tide on Baslzer on to two unfolded chairs that were sitting next to each other. She covers "The Queen of Spades." 1-2-3. The 2 members of Team Ripley just defeated the four members of Team Baszler.
Winners: Team Ripley (Rhea Ripley & Candice LeRae)
No. 1 Contender Triple-Threat Match
* Killian Dain vs. Pete Dunne vs. Damian PriestThe video package for the triple-threat match to determine Adam Cole's challenger for the NXT World Championship at WWE Survivor Series tomorrow night airs.
After that, we shoot back inside the arena where Imperium is shown sitting at ringside as the lights in the arena goes out and Damian Priest's theme music plays inside Allstate Arena.
Out next are Killian Dain and the former WWE United Kingdom Champion, Pete Dunne. Our second match here at NXT TakeOver: WarGames 2019 is about to get underway.
Dunne is knocked out of the ring soon after the bell, allowing Priest to blast Dain with some kicks. Dunne is quick to return to the ring, and he takes out Priest, leaving him alone in the ring with Dain.
Dunne goes to work on the hand and fingers of Dain, stomping on them, only to turn around into a knockout punch from Priest. Priest knocks Dunne out of the ring on one side and Dain on the other. He charges for a suicide dive, but Dunne runs around the ring and stops him.
Back in the ring, Dain starts to take over. He takes out Dunne and then hits a wicked Michinoku Driver on Priest, who lands on Dunne's face. We see some replays of that one as McGuinness speculates that Dunne's nose could be broken.
Dain continues his dominance on Priest outside the ring. He slams him on the announce table and over runs Dunne. Dain has Priest up in a bodyslam position as Dunne runs over and jumps on him in cross body fashion, sticking to him like glue. The fans "ooh" and "ahh" as the powerful Dain holds both guys up for a few seconds before smashing them both on the floor with momentum.
Dunne and Dain back in the ring, and Dunne is firing away with kicks and chops, trying to use his quickness to take over. Priest enters the mix and the two exchange suplex attempts only for Dunne to break free and catch Dain with a snap-suplex. Dunne takes a moment to play to the crowd before a leaping armbreaker almost catches Priest. Dunne switches to a triangle attempt, but over Dain comes. Dain and Priest hoist Dunne up and hit a double power bomb on him.
Dain and Priest stare and circle each other. They trade punches and start to go at it now as Dunne sells on the ring apron. Dain and Priest stare and circle each other. They trade punches and start to go at it now as Dunne sells on the ring apron. All three guys charge at each other with dropkick attempts, with all of their feet and legs slamming into each other as they crash to the mat and the crowd erupts with a big pop followed by a "NXT! NXT!" chant.
Priest hits one of his finishers and Dain it outside the ring. McGuinness says Priest has a rare opportunity to score a pin on an isolated Dunne.
After a big Razor's Edge from Priest to Dunne onto the announce table outside the ring, Dain rolls through the ropes and splashes onto Priest. Huge pop from the fans. He runs on the floor and does it again on the floor, crashing through the ringside barricade as the fans break out into "Holy Sh*t! Holy Sh*t!" chants.
Priest and Dain continue their battle in the ring while Dunne continues to recover from the Razor's Edge on the announce table. Dain climbs up for a Vader Bomb but Priest stops him, hooks his arms and nails him with a walk-away throwing Razor's Edge. He goes for the pin, but this brings Dunne back into the ring to break up the three count.
Dunne stomps away at Priest now as the fans start to come alive while the pace in the ring picks up. Priest at 6'7'', 300-pounds goes flying with a suicide dive splashing onto Dain on the floor is followed up by an insane top-rope moonsault from Dunne onto both guys on the floor.
Dunne goes for the cross armbreaker on Priest but Dain splashes on them to break it up. Dain with a big running slam on Priest for a pin attempt that only gets him a two count.
Dain hangs Dunne in the Tree of Woe in the corner. He slams Priest into him and then runs and splashes into both of them. He climbs up while Dunne is still hanging and hits a Vader Bomb on Priest. Dunne flies off with a moonsault to break up the pin attempt.
Priest hits The Reckoning and goes for the pin, but Dunne breaks it up. Priest throws his hands up in frustration. All three guys are slow to get back to their feet.
All three guys fight to the top rope. Dunne messes with Priest's fingers and knocks him off. He falls -- hard -- back-first on the ring apron near the corner of the ring.
Dunne superplexes Dain off for a pin attempt, but no dice as Priest breaks it up. Dain hits a Samoan drop type slam on Dunne onto Priest, but Dunne kicks him out of the ring and pins Priest.
Dunne gets the 1-2-3 and the win. With the victory, it will now be Pete Dunne vs. Adam Cole for the NXT World Championship at WWE Survivor Series tomorrow night on pay-per-view.
Winner and ADVANCING to NXT Title Match at WWE Survivor Series: Pete Dunne
NXT TakeOver: Portland 2020 Announced
A vignette airs promoting NXT TakeOver: Portland coming to Oregon on February 16th.
Matt Riddle vs. Finn Balor
The video package for our next match airs now, as it's time for the in-ring return to the black-and-gold brand of Finn Balor, as he goes one-on-one with "The King of Bros" Matt Riddle NEXT here at NXT TakeOver: WarGames.
The package ends, Matt Riddle's music plays and the "Bro! Bro! Bro!" chants immediately break out inside Allstate Arena. Riddle makes his way to the ring.
The lights go out and Balor's music starts playing as Mauro Ranallo points out that Balor is finally making his in-ring return for NXT here at NXT TakeOver: WarGames. The bell sounds and here we go.
Riddle tries for an amateur wrestling takedown early on, which Balor laughs off. The fans break out in dueling chants for both Riddle and Balor as the action gets underway now, with Balor jumping off to an early offensive advantage.
Balor is putting it on Riddle now in the corner of the ring with chops and stomps. The referee pulls him off and he runs back with a hesitation dropkick that blasts Riddle in the mouth. Balor fish-hooks Riddle's nose and drops an elbow on his dome before locking in a rear head lock and taking him to the mat.
Riddle fights back now and is taking over the offense in this one. He flies through the ropes, crashing onto Balor on the floor. The action returns to the ring, with Riddle remaining in control.
Balor starts to show signs of life now, as he blasts The King of Bros with a flying forearm. Now Riddle catches Balor with an ankle lock submission, ala Kurt Angle. Balor tries fighting out but Riddle keeps the hold maintained until Balor finally crawls to the ropes, forcing the hold to be broken up by the ref. Riddle kicks Balor as he walks away.
Riddle is taking back over control of the offense once again this one, as he keeps his hands locked around Balor's waist and works him over with various strikes and suplexes.
Balor with an exploding dropkick out of nowhere. Balor hits one of his finishers on Riddle for a follow-up. Riddle spears Balor as he attempts to do something else. Riddle with a JackHammer, or BroHammer, as Ranallo questions out loud, as he is taking back over now. He covers Balor but he somehow kicks out at two.
Balor cuts Riddle's comeback short and hits another finisher of his for a near fall. He looks upset now that Riddle is still in this one. Riddle catches Balor coming in with a big kick. Balor hits a dropkick in response. He climbs to the top for the double stomp but Riddle rolls away. Balor hurts his injured ankle landing and Riddle quickly rolls over and locks Balor in one of his submission finishers. Balor eventually fights his way out. He hits the 1916 DDT and covers him. 1-2-3. Balor wins.
Winner: Finn Balor
Men's WarGames Match
Team Undisputed ERA (Adam Cole, Roderick Strong, Kyle O'Reilly & Bobby Fish) vs. Team Ciampa (Tommaso Ciampa, Keith Lee, Dominik Dijakovic & TBA)After the video package for tonight's main event airs, the entrances get underway as the WarGames cage has again been lowered. The heel team of The Undisputed ERA, led by Adam Cole with Roderick Strong, Kyle O'Reilly and Bobby Fish have made their way out, as has the baby face team -- which is still just a trio -- of Tommaso Ciampa, Keith Lee and Dominik Dijakovic.
Ciampa and Strong kick things off for their respective teams. After the early goings, Strong establishes the early offensive advantage over the captain of the baby face team. Ciampa fights back after blocking a suplex attempt by Strong. Ciampa gets in some kicks and some other offensive spots before Strong takes back over.
Strong now is landing punches on Ciampa in the corner of the ring as the announcers continue to question if Team Ciampa is really going to be a three-person unit for this four-on-four WarGames match.
The five-minute clock is up and now it's time for Team Undisputed ERA to gain the two-on-one advantage in this WarGames contest.
After the buzzer sounds, out comes Kyle O'Reilly from the locked cage to enter the WarGames cage. He and Strong immediately start their two-on-one assault of Ciampa as the announcers once again question if Ciampa has a fourth teammate or not, as Lee and Dijakovic are the only two members in the holding cage at the top of the entrance.
The clock expires and Dominik Dijakovic makes his way out of the holding cage as the odds are now evened up inside the WarGames cage at two-on-two with Dijakovic joining Ciampa in the battle against The Undisputed ERA's Roderick Strong and Kyle O'Reilly.
Immediately Dijakovic makes a difference in the match as he uses his size and strength to manhandle O'Reilly and Strong. He blasts both guys with big strikes and big slams. He throws both into the WarGames cage as the fans roar inside Allstate Arena.
Dijakovic and Ciampa talk briefly to game plan their attack, as Ciampa and Strong splinter off on one side of the ring, while Dijakovic and O'Reilly battle on the other side and eventually into the other ring altogether.
The clock runs out and the buzzer sounds. The Undisputed ERA's holding cage is unlocked and out comes Bobby Fish, the veteran of the group, as the heel squad once again gets the numbers game advantage in their factor as WarGames turns into a three-on-two battle in their favor.
It isn't immediate, but within a few seconds the three-on-two numbers game is too much for Ciampa and Dijakovic, as they chop their larger foes down and start to utilize the two-on-one or three-on-one, when needed, numbers game advantage. Dijakovic is stuck between the outside of the ropes and the WarGames cage. Each guy takes turns Stinger-splashing onto him. They do the same to Ciampa on the other side of the cage and then play to the crowd. "Home sweet home!" they yell as they continue to taunt their fallen foes as time ticks away on the clock.
Down runs the clock and so does Keith Lee after being unlocked from the holding cage at the top of the entrance way. The final member of Team Ciampa that is present in the arena right now anyways charges down to the ring and immediately changes the dynamic in the match.
The large man, fresh off of his staredown with Braun Strowman on WWE Friday Night SmackDown On FOX last night, takes out all three members of The Undisputed ERA with his size and agility and explosive offensive style. At one point the announcers question if he is Bruce Lee because of his style.
Ciampa starts entering the battle again, firing away with punches on any-and-everything that moves as he gets a surge of adrenaline. Dijakovic does the same now with massive forearms to the back of any Undisputed ERA member in reach.
The numbers game is once again in the favor of The Undisputed ERA, as the clock runs out and NXT World Champion Adam Cole is let out of the holding cage at the top of the entrance way.
The fans explode as The Undisputed ERA Team Captain makes his way to the ring. He pulls some tables out from under the ring as the fans cheer and eventually chant "Thank You Adam!" over and over again as Cole continues to pull more and more tables out, as he passes them over to his teammates who bring them into the ring inside the WarGames cage.
As they continue to filter tables in the ring, Ciampa ends up knocking his teammates away from the door, and he pushes Cole off the ring steps. Cole falls backwards through a table set up behind him on the floor as the fans erupt inside Allstate Arena.
Finally, Cole is put in the ring as the cage door is locked behind him. Mauro Ranallo claims WarGames is on now as it's four on three. Eventually all guys get to their feet and enter the same ring on opposing sides. They stare each other down, with the four members of Team Undisputed ERA looking at the three members of Team Ciampa.
The seven guys charge at each other and the fight begins as the crowd goes nuts once again. Eventually The Undisputed ERA gains the upper-hand, as the four-on-three numbers game becomes too much for Ciampa, Dijavokic and Lee to handle. The time runs out on the final three-minute clock for Team Ciampa. Nothing happens. No one comes out.
The Undisputed ERA laugh as nothing happens and you can hear crickets. Finally, they go to continue their assault on the three members of Team Ciampa.
Wait just a minute! Before they do anything, the familiar theme music of Kevin Owens hits the loud speakers inside Allstate Arena and the fans here in Rosemont go absolutely bonkers.
The fans chant "Holy Sh*t! Holy Sh*t!" as Owens makes his way to the ring. He enters the ring and the cage is locked behind him. Mauro Ranallo informs us that the four-on-four WarGames Match is now officially underway.
As the NXT Universe breaks out into a "Welcome Back! Welcome Back!" chant, Owens takes out anything that moves with powerbombs. He and Cole stare each other down as the chants continue. Owens flips him off and goes to work on him.
Now Dijakovic and Lee enter the picture. They double team Strong in one ring while Cole, Fish and O'Reilly in the opposite ring. They throw him over both sets of ropes and he crashes into all three of his teammates. Owens climbs up the ropes and shakes the cage to play to the fans, who go nuts again.
Ciampa with a draping DDT sends O'Reilly face-first into the canvas. Meanwhile, Dijakovic sets up a table in another ring. Owens nearly powerbombs Cole on the steel grate that separates the two rings. Cole stops it with a super kick. Panama Sunrise by Owens is blocked by Adam Cole. Cole hits it on Owens onto a trash can and the steel grate. The fans explode and settle into "Mama Mia! Mama Mia!" chants as both guys, along with several others, are down all over the place.
Meanwhile, Fish and Strong start setting up multiple tables in the other ring, while some tables are still set up in the other ring. Ciampa hits Project Ciampa knees to the back of Strong before running back and forth and smashing O'Reilly and Fish into the cage. Cole cuts him off, but Ciampa sends him over the ropes and runs back-and-forth smashing him into the cage now. He plays to the fans a bit before looking around at all the fallen bodies.
He goes and picks one up, as he brings Adam Cole to the top rope and goes up with him. They have a table set up right in front of them. Cole goes for a sunset bomb but Ciampa blocks it. Meanwhile the other members of Undisputed ERA have Keith Lee beat up in a corner of the other ring where multiple tables are set up in front of them.
Now Adam Cole, who faces Pete Dunne with his NXT title on the line at Survivor Series tomorrow night, climbs to the very top of the WarGames cage. Ciampa climbs up there as well. The fans chant "Please Don't Die! Please Don't Die!" Strong is put through a table by Dijakovic.
Owens climbs to the top rope and hits a frogsplash to put O'Reilly through a table. Next, Keith Lee power bombs Fish through a table. Now we see a shot of Cole and Ciampa exchanging punches while seated on top of the WarGames cage.
Ciampa picks Cole up and drapes him across his shoulders / on his back. Mauro Ranallo says "Please god no!" as Ciampa looks down.
He does it. They really did it.
Oh my god.
Ciampa goes flying down with Cole across his shoulders / on his back and hits his finisher putting himself and Cole through the table, with Cole landing first and Ciampa landing on top of him.
1-2-3.
It's all over. Team Ciampa has just defeated The Undisputed ERA to win Men's WarGames here at NXT TakeOver in Rosemont, Illinois.
Winners: Team Ciampa
