The Rock surprised life-long friend Harvey Whippleman, (aka Downtown Bruno) with a gift on the set of Young Rock (A sitcom series that looks at the formative years of superstar Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson as he grows up through life).
Standing on the set of The Rock's new sitcom, Whippleman stood unknowingly directly in front of what would, only minutes later, be divulged was his own new Ford F-150, gifted by Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson (whom Whippleman affectionately called "DJ").
The Rock recalled how when he was a nobody and had no place to live, Whippleman took him in and let him stay with him, marking the beginning of a life-long friendship. During the meeting, The Rock also recalled the story of how Whippleman helped him buy his very first car and added that he wanted to return the favor.
"...when I was 15yrs old, Bruno even gave me his last $40 bucks so I could hustle a crackhead out of his car one night at a honky tonk in Nashville."
Johnson continued to tell the story, when Whippleman recalled his memory of the events.
Whippleman said, "The crackhead asked, 'Who wants to buy this Thunderbird? I got a Thunderbird for sale,' I told him, 'I'll give you $40, and come back tomorrow to give you $40 tomorrow,' (knowing we'd never see him again!)"
Whippleman continued the story.
"I trailed him back to the Alamo Plaza, there was no license tag on the car or nothing. The windshield was broken out. He [15 year old Johnson] pulled over, I thought, 'Oh, it done gave out already'..." Whippleman finished telling the story stating that another crackhead popped up from behind the seat and asked, "Where we goin?".
Johnson then finished by sharing they told the person he had to get out of the car, and they drove the rest of the way home. Johnson then said that he never forgot Whippleman's kindness.
Merry Christmas, Bruno and since you helped me “buy” my first car - I figured I could return the favor and buy you one that 100% does NOT have a crackhead in the back seat.
