Welcome to SummerSlam Night One!
Welcome one and all to our first-ever, two-night SummerSlam! Our live results coverage begins at 6pm Eastern when the main show kicks off, but there's three hours of pre-show coverage available on the Peacock network this afternoon. There's six matches scheduled for tonight--twelve in total for the two-night weekend event--with a slew of titles up for grabs. Our official preview breaks it down by day, for those interested.
Go ahead and bookmark this page as it'll transition to live results shortly before the start of tonight's program. Who's your picks to win tonight? Weigh in below and make discourse with your fellow RajahManiacs!
Last minute card updates and tweaks will come out about 5pm Eastern. Until then, y'all have a great SummerSlam Saturday! (And, again, a reminder that it starts at 6pm Eastern/5 Central/4 Mountain/3 Pacific. I erroneously said 7pm EST earlier. My bad.)
Show Starting Soon
It's 5:13pm and our show starts at the top of the hour! I believe Reigns/Uso vs Breakker/Bronson will open us up, but I'm neither Miss Cleo nor going to research it right now (I don't want spoilers, do you want spoilers? I want to be surprised--what if it's Cena/Cody to start us off to shock the world?)
SummerSlam Night One Live Results
Welcome to SummerSlam!
Tonight's action is brought to you by Wing Stop. Michael Cole welcomes us to East Rutherford, New Jersey, then quickly runs down a bit of tonight's card. Druski hosts a video package hyping SummerSlam. Afterwards, we're told to welcome our host, highly-acclaimed rapper Cardi B. She comes out to the stage after a moment and gets a decent pop. Doesn't last long. She makes her way own the ramp at 6:07pm. With the Reigns match next, I do believe Richy was right.
Tag Team Match: Roman Reigns & Jey Uso vs Bron Breakker & Bronson Reed w/ Paul Heyman
Jey Uso begins his entrance backstage and through the crowd at 6:10pm EST. Cole welcomes us to Yeet Jersey. I'll update when Roman begins his entrance then again 7 minutes later when its over. Michael Cole and Wade Barrett are our commentary team. At 6:15pm EST, Roman Reigns begins his entrance. Jersey tosses the ones to the sky in acknowledgement of the OTC. Reigns is on his way out, folks! At 6:18pm EST, Bron Breakker, Bronson Reed, and Hall of Famer "the Wise Oracleman" Paul Heyman begin their group entrance. Thank god. Reed has Reigns' sneakers around his neck and we're told he calls them the "Shoe-lafala" as he's "the Tribal Thief." Haha. We get our opening bell at 6:21pm. All four men come to blows, with Jey pairing off with Breakker as Reigns begins to ten-punch Reed while mounted in the corner. Uso and Reigns clear the ring. Jey yeets and wants Roman to. Reigns tells Uso to run it back, so Uso calls for production to run it back. Uso's music plays and Reigns/Uso jam a bit until Bronson Reed spoils the fun. All four men brawl on the outside as the ref allows a lot of lateral. Reed sends Reigns into the steel steps as Uso and Breakker battle in the ring.
Finally order is restored and Bronson Reed begins to work over Jey Uso in the ring. Reed takes Uso into the heel corner and tags in Breakker. Roman's down outside but begins to recover as the crowd chants for him. Breakker takes a lengthy stretch in control of Uso. Reigns finally returns to his corner and Breakker takes time out to taunt him. Breakker brings Reed back in at 6:26pm. Breakker slaps a chinlock on Uso and begins to taunt Roman Reigns, mocking the European-style chant the crowd does (I do not know wtf to call it) by saying Reigns sucks and shouldn't have returned. Breakker takes a very lengthy turn in control, keeping the pace slow while utilizing working holds and taunts to batter Uso's body and spirit. Breakker sends Uso outside and looks for a diving attack off the apron, but Uso moves out of the way. Breakker crashes knee-first into the reinforced side of the table. Uso drags himself into the ring as Heyman checks on Breakker. Reed tries to stop Uso from tagging but Uso sends him out of the way. Uso dramatically goes for the hot tag but Breakker enters the ring and intercepts him at the last second to boos. Breakker resumes stomping away on Uso at 6:30pm.
Finally Jey Uso manages to hit a desperation DDT, causing enough separation to make the hot tag to Roman Reigns. Reigns comes in and takes it to Breakker, dropping him with a huge diving clothesline to a big pop. Reigns begins to unload on Breakker in the corner with clubbing forearms as the crowd keeps count. Reigns looks for a Spear but Breakker intercepts him with a back elbow. Reigns clotheslines Breakker over the top rope to another pop. The crowd's eating it all up, folks. At 6:33pm, Reigns executes a high-flying dive over the top to wipe out both Breakker and Reed at ringside! Great height on that one! Reigns posts up in the corner and load & locks--then executes a Superman Punch to Reed! Breakker rolls Reigns up from behind but only gets a two, then takes out Reigns knee. Breakker pulls down his straps to and the crowd barks for it. Steiner runs rope-to-rope and right into a Superman Punch from Reigns. Reigns didn't see the blind tag from Reed as Breakker bounced off the ropes, however, and Reed drops Reigns from behind.
Reed with a big running splash in the corner. Reed fails to see Jey Uso tag Reigns, draped over Reed's shoulders. Uso enters the ring and takes down Reed. Uso takes Reed to the corner for a hip attack. Reed clobbers Uso as he runs in again. Death Valley Driver from Reed! Reed covers for two. The action spills outside as Reed continues to wreck havoc. Breakker posts up around the ring, eying Reigns, then fires off for a rapid-speed flying clothesline that sends Reigns over the barricade! Reed takes Uso into the ring and tags in Breakker at 6:37pm. Reed positions Uso on top of his shoulders as Breakker heads up top and they hits a flying Bulldog in shades of the Steiner Brothers! A cover for no joy. Reed stays in the ring as Breakker heads outside, looking for another running Spear. Reigns shoves Jey Uso out of the way and intercepts with a Superman Punch! Reigns spears Breakker through the barricade! Reed attacks Uso and takes him inside as both Reigns & Breakker are down. Heyman tells Reed to "finish him off" and Reed yells for a Tsunami. Reed climbs up top but Reigns catches him from the blindside with a Superman Punch! Uso & Reigns work together to hit the 1D on Reed! Uso covers but Breakker makes the save at 6:40pm.
Breakker taunts the crowd; several moments pass. Everyone's down but Breakker. Breakker mounts Uso and pounds with big rights. Commentary praise Breakker for not even looking tired. Breakker pulls down the straps to a huge pop! Breakker posts up int he corner, points at Jey Uso, screams with fury and charges--Roman Reigns shoves Jey out of the way and eats the Spear! Jey fires off a Spear of his own, dropping Breakker. Uso heads up top and hits an Uso Splash on Reed, covering for a fast count (it felt fast!) to pick up the win at 6:42pm!
Your Winners, Roman Reigns & Jey Uso! (21 minutes)
WWE Women's Tag Team Championship Match: The Judgment Day(c) vs Alexa Bliss & Charlotte Flair
After filler hype, Alexa Bliss begins her entrance at 6:53pm alongside Charlotte Flair. Out next are the champs, the Judgment Day as represented by Raquel Rodriguez and Roxanne Perez. We get our bell at 6:42pm as the Judgment Day attack the challengers. Perez and Bliss start us off. Bliss quickly sends Perez across the ring and tags in Flair to some minor woos. Well, I had three paragraphs typed before technical difficulties wiped it out. God damnit. Sorry, folks. You didn't miss much--Bliss came in for a lengthy stretch and the heels dominated. Bliss accidentally clocked Flair in a spot; Flair hinted at retaliation but, in the end, took out Raquel to allow Bliss to hit Sister Abigail and pick up the win--and the straps--at approximately 7:12pm.
Your Winners and NEW Women's Tag Team Champions, Charlotte Flair & Alexa Bliss! (approximately 30 minutes)
Singles Match: Sami Zayn vs Karrion Kross w/ Scarlett
Kross begins his entrance at 7:16pm and gets a good reception. Sami Zayn is out next a couple of minutes later, and we get our bell at 7:20pm EST. The action spills outside, and Sami Zayn hits a Moonsault off the barricade to wipe out Kross before taking the action back inside. Zayn looks for a top rope attack but Kross avoids it. Kross with a Death Valley Driver for an early pin attempt. The pace slows a bit, and the crowd rips off a dueling chant that's indiscernible. Kross maintains control for a lengthy period. Kross looks for a few covers throughout. He begins to yell and taunt Sami, including yelling "just say it, bastard!" At approximately 7:27pm, Scarlett slips a weapon into the ring as Zayn makes his comeback. She taunts him, encouraging him to use it. He thinks it over for several long moments but tosses it out. Kross tries to roll him up from behind but Zayn escapes. Zayn hits an Exploder on Kross in the corner, then a Helluva Kick. Zayn covers and picks up the win at 7:28pm!
Your Winner, Sami Zayn! (8 minutes)
In Memory of Hulk Hogan
Michael Cole & Wade Barrett take a moment to acknowledge the passing of Hulk Hogan. A package plays for him. Cole reminds us of Hogan's accomplishments at SummerSlams pass--the Mega Powers, sharing the ring with HBK, Orton, and so many others. Rest in peace, Hulkster. And remember, you can separate Hulk Hogan from Terry Bolea and pay homage/tribute to the former. Y'all know you still listening to Michael Jackson, Kanye and Drake, after all.
WWE Women's Championship Match: Tiffany Stratton(c) vs Jade Cargill
The time is now 7:37pm. The sun is setting in New Jersey. It's been nearly ten minutes since our last bell, and probably 4-6 more before the next bell. Stay tuned. Jade Cargill begins her entrance at 7:41pm. And it's Tiffy Time at 7:43pm as our champ makes her way out. We get our bell at 7:46pm. Tiffy screams "what time is it" before the two engage. They start the pace slow. Tiffy extends a hand to shake and Cargill jump kicks her in the face, covering for two. The action spills outside early on. Cargill rolls in and out of the ring, as appropriate, to break the ref's count. Finally Cargill takes it inside and taunts the crowd with a flex. Tiffy attacks her from behind and sends her outside, then follows it up with a spot-on Suicide Dive to wipe out the challenger. Stratton takes it inside the ring then heads up to the top turnbuckle, hitting a Swanton off the top for a one-and-a-half count. Cargill pulls herself up into the corner and counters Stratton's handspring/backspring/whatever combo. Cargill takes a turn in control at 7:49pm, hitting a sit-out powerbomb that she calls "the Eye of the Storm" for two.
The two begin to slug it out in the ring after several moments. Stratton hit the flippy move on Cargill, then hits a crappy Alabama Slam in the middle of the ring. Stratton goes for the Prettiest Moonsault Ever but Cargill gets the knees up. Cargill looks for a cover but Stratton rolls through and gets a ahold of the ropes in the corner. Cargill hits a chokeslam, then throws Tiffy into the corner. Cargill climbs the turnbuckles and pulls Stratton up with her, setting up for a Jaded attempt. Stratton counters, diving off and flipping Cargill across the ring. Stratton rushes up top and hits the Prettiest Moonsault Ever and picks up the win quickly at 7:53pm.
Your Winner AND STILL WWE Women's Champion, Tiffany Stratton! (7 minutes)
Tag Team Match: Randy Orton & Jelly Roll vs Drew McIntyre & Logan Paul
After hype, Logan Paul begins his entrance at 8:02pm. Out next at 8:05pm is his tag team partner for tonight, "the Scottish Psychopath" Drew McIntyre. Jelly Roll is out next at 8:07pm, who pauses at the stage to get on the mic. "I'd like to take a moment to pledge allegiance to the Apex Predator tonight!" He sings the opening line of Orton's theme, then Orton comes out at 8:08pm. Again, WWE missed a golden opportunity to simply have Jelly Roll re-record Orton's theme (even if he just did the lyrics over the old audio track) and have them come out to it. Oh well. We're told Jelly Roll, weighing in tonight at 290, has lost over 230 pounds to get ready for this match. (Pretty sure he lost it for his health, but if it's true he's been training years for a match set up last month, great job!) We finally get our bell at 8:13pm. We start with Logan Paul hitting a cheap shot on Jelly Roll, causing Orton to chase after him until the ref stops him. After some discussion, it looks like Orton and Paul are starting. The crowd's hot for this one. Jelly Roll immediately tags himself in, as he's hot after the cheap shot from Logan Paul. Orton concedes and the crowd cheers for Jelly Roll. Roll & Logan spend time jawing. Just fight, folks, c'mon.
Finally Logan Paul kicks Roll in the midsection and we're off. Paul with a scoop slam on Roll; Roll with one of his own. Roll covers for two, shocking Paul. Drew McIntyre tags in. The crowd's loud with the Jelly Roll chants. Orton tells Roll to tag him in, so Roll decides to taunt McIntyre before tagging in Orton. McIntyre smacks him in the back of the head. Again, Orton tells Roll to tag him in but Roll wants to discuss it. Orton finally fires Roll up, and Roll marches up to McIntyre, coming face-to-chest with Drew. Then, suddenly, Jelly seems to regret this. Drew yells "this is how the music dies," only for Roll to slap him. Roll with a series of jabs to stun Drew, briefly, before McIntyre shuts him down with a Glasgow Kiss headbutt. Drew begins to work Roll over on the ropes while taunting Orton. McIntyre with chest slaps on Roll in the corner. McIntyre with a big right that drops Roll to the mat. Drew begins to work Roll's arm, yelling at Orton "I hear voices and they said you're screwed." Haha. Logan Paul tags in and slows the pace. The crowd loudly yells "Fuck you, Logan" and it gets censored. Logan continues to spend time taunting Jelly Roll, Randy Orton, and the crowd. Paul takes Roll into the heel corner and unloads a series of body shots, maintaining control.
Paul stands on the middle ropes and grabs Roll's head, rubbing Roll's face in Paul's crotch to boos. McIntyre tags in and uses a side headlock to restrain Roll. Drew with punishing blows to the restrained Roll. Drew streaks over and hits a cheap shot on Randy Orton to boos. Drew mocks Orton. Drew sees Jelly Roll and charges him; Roll drops down and sends McIntyre flying over the top rope. Orton resumes his position in the corner and Roll makes the hot tag at 8:19pm. Orton sends Logan out of the ring then hits his Powerslam combo on McIntyre. The crowd's on fire! Orton with his patented Draping DDT on Drew McIntyre! Orton's Viping up, slamming his fists into the mat as he calls for the RKO. Paul drags McIntyre out of the ring to loud boos. Orton exits the opposite side, stalks Paul, and begins to attack him at the ringside area. McIntyre tries to intervene but Orton back drops him on the commentary table! Paul rushes in and eats a back drop for his troubles! Drew McIntyre hits a Claymore from outta nowhere on Orton, dropping him. Jelly Roll recovers and checks on Orton. Paul attacks Roll from behind, hitting a clubbing axe handle blow across his back.
Logan calls for his "titanium-loaded right hand" and hits his "knockout punch" on Jelly Roll outside the ring. The ref's been giving them ample leeway with this match. Paul clears the commentary table, then drinks a Prime from the Prime Station by commentary. Drew McIntyre pulls Jelly Roll up and puts him on the commentary table. Paul heads up top, climbing to the top of the ring post. He toasts some Prime (bottles) as Drew counts him down, then hits a diving Frog Splash off the top onto Jelly Roll and through the table at 8:23pm! Right in front of his wife, the madman! EMTs check on Jelly Roll after that big bump and Logan Paul hands Michael Cole something. Not sure if we were meant to see that. Probably a Twinkie. McIntyre heads into the ring and plays it up to the crowd. This is the hottest the crowd's been all night, by the way. The action resumes in the ring at 8:25pm as Logan Paul & Drew McIntyre work together to stomp away at Orton in the corner. Roll should be okay, the medical staff are doing their due diligence. Paul & McIntyre use quick tags to keep Orton isolated as medical staff begin helping Roll limp around the ring towards the back. Logan Paul mocks Roll as he's being helped past them.
Drew sets up Orton for a Blockbuster from Paul. Paul covers for two, but Orton kicks out. Jelly Roll is shown pausing at the start of the ramp, all while Logan Paul laughs and mocks him. Drew McIntyre heads up top, taunting the crowd and Orton. Orton recovers and begins to battle back. Orton heads up after McIntyre and hits a Superplex off the top! Jelly Roll, who never made it far up the ramp, limps back to the ring to a big pop. Orton makes the hot tag at 8:28pm, and Roll hits multiple clotheslines on Logan Paul! Jelly Roll hits a Chokeslam on Logan Paul! Roll then hits a Black Roll Slam (???) on Drew McIntyre as the stadium is on fire! Roll moves in on Logan Paul; Paul looks for a Blockbuster off the top but Jelly Roll counters it into a spinning Powerslam! drew McIntyre with a Claymore on Jelly Roll, but Orton hits an RKO outta nowhere on Drew! Logan sends Orton into the ring post and out of the ring. Logan heads up to and hits the Paul From Grace off the top to pick up the win at 8:29pm!
Your Winners, Drew McIntyre & Logan Paul! (16 minutes)
World Heavyweight Championship Main Event Match: Gunther(c) vs CM Punk
Oh thank goodness. At 8:40pm, CM Punk begins his entrance. It's time for our main event match, folks! Punk's decked out in Fantastic 4-themed gear. The crowd adores Punk, as expected, and we await the entrance for our World Heavyweight Champion and my eighth cousin, thrice removed, "the Ring General" Gunther. After he makes his entrance, we get our main-event announcements from Alicia Taylor ahead of our bell at 8:46pm. We're reminded it's the first meeting between Punk and Gunther. The crowd rips off a loud chant for Punk. After several long moments, both men lockup in a test of strength. Gunther pushes Punk back into the corner; Punk with a standing switch, putting the champ in the corner. The ref forces a break. Gunther adjusts his hair as Punk puts up his dukes and the two kill more time before locking up. We're reminded that Gunther has roughly 4 losses in the last five years. The pace for this one will be slow and more technical. Gunther takes a lengthy stretch of time in control, all but brutalizing Punk. Highlights include Gunther chopping Punk's chest and his hamstring. Ouch. Very, very slow, methodical pacing from our champ as he works over Punk's shoulders and arms. Punk tries to rally at 8:54pm, but a huge chop from Gunther drops the challenger.
Around 8:56, the pace picks up as both men begin laying into each other. Punk tries to show signs of life, and near connects with a Go To Sleep (GTS). Gunther, however, weathers in and unloads with more brutal strikes and chops to Punk. Gunther chops Punk over the top rope to the outside. Gunther resumes slowing the pace and taunting Punk. Gunther again unloads with powerful chops to Punk, completely battering him throughout this match. Punk again shows signs of life, firing off chops and kicks of his own. Gunther shuts that down with a massive chop. Gunther rains elbow blows on a prone punk as he berates him, yelling "who's the kid now? Call me kid again! Call me kid again!" It's 9pm and Punk powers to a vertical base. Punk looks for a GTS but Gunther escapes. Punk looks for a Sharpshooter but Gunther kicks him off. Gunther with a scoop slam on Punk, taking control again. Gunther grabs Punks legs and slaps on a Sharpshooter! Punk literally is tapping the canvas--I think trying to fire himself up but that should be a tapout. The ref lets it continue. Gunther looks for a leg submission but Punk counters it into a Figure 4, then progresses it into a Sharpshooter! Gunther grabs the rope to force the break.
A bloody and bruised Punk begins to show life at 9:04pm, finally chaining enough offense together to be called an offensive comeback. Punk with big chops and clotheslines. Punk drives the champ into the canvas and covers for two. Gunther hits a big Powerbomb out of nowhere to stop Punk's momentum. Gunther takes some time recovering, then slowly approaches Punk. Punk slaps on a Triangle Hold out of nowhere! Gunther manages to escape. Gunther with a big chop to Punk, followed by a strike to the back of the neck. Gunther looks for a Sleeper but Punk was ready and fires off a Side Russian Leg Sweep! Several more moments pass as both men take time to recover. Punk begins to climb the turnbuckles and the crowd comes to their feet. Gunther quickly rises and chops Punk to stop his progress. Gunther throws Punk off the top and halfway across the ring. Gunther climbs up top and hits a strong splash off the top, covering for two. Punk just did manage to get the shoulder up in time, per Cole. Cole compared Gunther's diving splash to a "flying pterodactyl." Gunther continues to keep the pace slow and talks trash to Punk. Gunther pulls Punk up only to clothesline him back down. At 9:10pm, Gunther hits another big clothesline to drop the exhausted Punk. Mixed cheers and boos for the champ as he plays to the crowd. we're over 20 minutes into this match. Punk suddenly catches a charging Gunther and goes for the GTS, waking the crowd and this writer up fully.
Gunther escapes and hits a Powerbomb on the challenger! We're building to the finish, folks, so hang in there. Damn--Gunther hits what looked like a brutal Shotgun Dropkick on Punk in the corner! That looked brutal! Punk looks absolutely battered as Gunther hits yet another Powerbomb! Punk is able to somehow hang on and kick out. The champ talks yet more smack to Punk, telling him "I'm right here!" Punk throws a weak punch to the leg; Gunther retaliates with yet more brutal chops. Gunther places Punk over the top ropes and continues to pummel him. Gunther slaps a modified anchor-type hold on Punk, on the corner turnbuckle, so that Punk's own weight is used against him. Punk falls to the floor and Gunther pulls him up. Gunther throws Punk across the ring post, then rolls in and out of the ring to break the ref's count. The ref warns Gunther to take it back inside the ring. Gunther heads to his title, on a pedestal, and says having it means he's the best in the world. Gunther climbs onto the commentary table and raises his arms, taking the proverbial victory lap. Punk attacks Gunther from behind, making him pay for his arrogance. Punk rips Gunther's legs out from under him, causing the champ to crash into the commentary table. Punk sits outside the ring for a few moments, taking a critical breather as the ref counts and Gunther starts to recover. Oh shit! The champ is busted open! Gunther's got a crimson mask as he tries to stumble into the ring! He barely makes it into the ring to break the count. He's bleeding a lot--Barrett thinks its from a broken nose.
