Tony Khan Calls WCW Closing Down "One Of Worst Things To Happen In American Sports"

Tony Khan recently spoke with Sports Grid for an in-depth interview covering all things All Elite Wrestling.

During the discussion, the AEW and ROH President spoke about the impact that WCW closing down and being acquired by WWE had on the pro wrestling industry as a whole, noting it was "one of the worst things that happened in American sports in [his] lifetime."

Additionally, the part owner of the Jacksonville Jaguars franchise in the National Football League (NFL) also touched on the changes that Vince McMahon's recent retirement will have on WWE, and the business in general.

Featured below are some of the highlights from the interview where he touches on these topics, as well as his thoughts on the promotion of Stephanie McMahon and Nick Khan to co-CEOs of WWE, Paul "Triple H" Levesque being moved up to WWE Head of Creative and the significance he feels free agency has on the fans of the wrestling business.

On the impact that the executive shake-ups behind-the-scenes in WWE will have on the business: "It’s going to change the competition, but I think that’s a good thing. AEW’s got a big fan base. We’re in 130 countries now around the world, and here in the US, we’ve built a great fanbase. And the competition is going to change. It’s a different person in the chair opposite me but I don’t think that’s going to be a bad thing for the wrestling fans, necessarily."

On how the changes will benefit the wrestlers themselves, who will be free to negotiate between the two companies: "Probably more so than ever, I imagine that great wrestlers are going to be in demand. And again, I think this is probably going to be good for the wrestling fans because that’s one of the most exciting things about pro wrestling is free agency. It’s one of those things that was really missing from the sport for almost two decades before AEW came in, because there was not a legitimate competitor in the free agent market, and now there is…one of the worst things, I think, that happened in American sports, in my lifetime, was when WCW closed down."
