This Saturday at WrestleMania, fans will witness a major showdown for the World Heavyweight Championship as Gunther puts his title on the line against this year’s Royal Rumble winner, Jey Uso.
Despite the high-stakes matchup, the decision to position Uso in such a prominent spot has been met with mixed reactions online. Some fans feel that Uso hasn't earned a top-tier singles match and should remain in a lower spot on the card.
Triple H addressed the criticism during an interview with Peter Rosenberg on WWE’s YouTube channel, explaining why now is the right time for Jey to be in the spotlight.
“Because the fans made it happen,” Triple H said. “Sometimes things happen organically, and Jey's journey through the Bloodline storyline made him a key figure in one of the most compelling narratives we’ve had. Then he stepped out on his own.”
He continued: “There’s always that question—once someone leaves Roman, leaves The Bloodline, can they still succeed? Or were they only relevant because of that? You give them a shot to show what they can do, and Jey seized those moments. That’s what this business is about—it’s about moments.”
Triple H emphasized that success in wrestling isn't just about in-ring skills. “People get caught up in the technical side. But if you look at the biggest stars in wrestling history, a lot of them weren’t the most technically sound wrestlers. Jey has great athletic ability, sure, but more importantly, he has charisma. He connects. When he walks into an arena and tens of thousands of people are doing his entrance with him, hanging on every word, that’s what makes a top guy.”
He added: “Jey is proving why he calls himself Main Event Jey Uso. Whether fans like it or not, he’s earned this spot. Gunther may believe that in-ring work is all that matters—but either he’ll beat the entertainment out of Jey Uso, or Jey will prove that star power and crowd connection are just as important.”
Jey Uso vs. GUNTHER will happen on night one of Mania, which is Saturday, April 19th.
