WWE is bringing back both the King and Queen of the Ring tournaments this year and they announced the details on last night's Friday Night Smackdown.
WWE Raw GM Adam Pearce and WWE Smackdown GM Nick Aldis jointly announced via video that the tournaments will begin shortly with the finals of both taking place in Saudi Arabia at the Night of Champions premium live event on June28. It was also announced that the winners of the tournament will once again get a title shot at their brand's top title at SummerSlam.
The first round is likely to begin next week on Raw following Money in the Bank and will comprise brand exclusive fatal four-way matches with the winners then moving onto the next round where we will see singles matches featuring Raw and Smackdown winners that will serve as the semi-finals. The winners then will move onto the finals at Night of Champions.
Brand-exclusive four-way qualifying matches will comprise the first round of the tournament and take place on WWE programming beginning “next week,” presumably on Monday’s Raw. The second round will feature Raw vs. SmackDown semifinals singles matches, with the finals to be held at Night of Champions.
Last year's King and Queen of the Ring winners were Gunther and Nia Jax, respectively, both of whom went onto win titles in their matches at SummerSlam.
