WWE The Bump Recap (11/17): Bret Hart Reflects On Survivor Series '96 Clash With Stone Cold Steve Austin

It’s Wednesday, and that means it’s time for another edition of WWE’s The Bump!

Today’s episode is full of top notch guests, including Austin Theory, Kevin Owens, and Bret Hart.

Now that we’re all caught up on what’s going down, let’s take a look at The Bump:

WWE’s The Bump

⁃ Kayla starts off the show, and tells the viewers “we have a really exciting show on tap for you today.”
⁃ The rest of The Bump crew share a few general thoughts on all of the latest action in WWE, until Kayla brings on the first guest.

Austin Theory

The latest addition to Team Raw joins The Bump crew, and Kayla begins by asking Austin about the decision Adam Pearce made on Monday night. Austin responds to a clip of the announcement from Pearce, and tells viewers “it means alot to be on the team. I’m 24, and I’m gonna be on the Survivor Series team this Sunday. I’m living my best life.” Matt brings up more comments made by Adam Pearce, and points out the fact that Austin is the only member of Team Raw that hasn’t held one of the top titles in WWE. Matt wonders if Theory has a message for his naysayers, so Austin explains “there’s always people that doubt Austin Theory, but the thing is, I’m Austin Theory! It’s gone from great to way better! It doesn’t matter if I haven’t held one of those belts yet... put all their records together, and I’m gonna top that.” Ryan wonders if Austin would be ok with being eliminated at Survivor Series, as long as Team Raw wins, and Theory says “here’s the thing... elimination isn’t in my book. Have you seen me in the Royal Rumble? No? But if you did, I’d win the thing. As for Survivor Series, of course Team Raw is gonna win. I’m gonna get in there, this future WWE and Universal Champion... that Head of the Table sweater over there? Yeah, more like head of the coffee table.” Kayla thanks Austin for stopping by the show, and it’s time for the next segment.

-Kayla plugs the latest season of WWE Supercard, and Kevin Owens joins The Bump crew.

Kevin Owens

The KO show takes over The Bump, and he looks pretty angry. Owens says “I’ve been sitting here waiting to talk for 20 mins, and I could have done something other than listen to Austin Theory.” Kayla follows up by asking Owens how he’s feeling physically, as well as mentally, ahead of his match at Survivor Series. The former Universal Champion says “physically I’m outside in my car, because I don’t want to bother my wife, her family is here. Mentally I’m just waiting for my day off, so I can enjoy time with my family.” Kayla takes Owens back to Monday Night Raw, where Kevin defeated Finn Balor, and wonders if Finn brings the best out of Owens. Kevin explains “he’s a fantastic performer, and on Monday I was better. It’s the first win in a while, which shows me that what happened with Big E... you know I tried to make up for things I did in my past, and then I turned on Big E... At least that’s what they say, but I think he turned on me, in my opinion. Then this week I got a win against Finn Balor, so maybe I should have done this a long time ago.” Matt follows up on the comment by Owens, and wonders if he regrets anything that has happened between himself and Big E. Owens tells Matt “no I don’t...” The Bump crew thanks Owens for the chat, and Kayla moves on to the next segment.

-Ryan plugs WWE’s new ugly Christmas sweater collection, and the final guest of the day is up next.

Bret Hart

Kayla welcomes “The best there is, the best there was, and the best that there ever will be” onto the show, and The Bump crew is joined by Bret Hart. Kayla begins by asking Bret how he’s been, and wonders what he’s been up to lately. Hart says “I’ve been good, just staying at home. Getting antsy about being here so often, but it’s nice to be home.” Matt gets to the task at hand, and asks Brett about his 1996 Survivor Series clash with Stone Cold Steve Austin. Matt wonders what expectations Brett had for match, as well as himself, so Hart explains “I wanted to pick up where I left off. This one took alot out of me! I was feeling it for months. It took me until two weeks before the WrestleMania match to shake this one off.” Ryan chimes in, and he wonders what kind of feedback Bret has received from the WWE Universe, when it comes to Survivor Series ‘96. Bret explains “you know it’s one of those that goes unnoticed. It holds up to WrestleMania 13 as a bookend. I don’t know which was more physical, maybe this one. Both are two of my favorite matches. That was the first time Steve and I had a really big match, I was under pressure to deliver... I remind people that as I went into '97, I delivered some of my best matches, I was at the top of my game. When I wrestled Austin it felt like a street fight, that’s what I like about our chemistry. It brought out a certain warfare with us, we always had this intensity. That was before he turned the corner and became the franchise star, but he was climbing right when that match happened.” Matt follows up by asking Bret when he realized Austin “had something,” and Kayla wants to know when Bret noticed the chemistry between himself and Steve. Bret goes on to say “the truth is, I thought Steve was someone to be reckoned with before he got to WWE. I remember when he went to ECW, and I went to Vince's office to ask Vince why they didn’t get him... why don’t we look into getting him? Vince went out and got him, and he was there in the locker room the next week.” Bret continued “we had a match in South Africa that was a good trail, and that’s when I realized I needed to get more ready for the match at Survivor Series. I found out through that experience that you have be in great ring shape to wrestle a guy like Stone Cold Steve Austin.” Matt asks Bret about the build to the Survivor Series showdown, and Hart tells viewers “I think Steve was a really great wrestler, and on the cusp of greatness. He was finding himself, and his confidence, and really reaching his pique. You can see how hard he wants his shot, he had never been given the big spotlight. He could taste that he was on the cusp, and I wanted to come back in a big way, so it was like two trains coming toward each other. I stand by any match we had together. We really did it all, and it was full contact, two guys really trying to make a difference in their careers, and it stands as a great honor for me.” Kayla thanks Brett for his time, and the final interview of the day comes to a close.

⁃ Matt, and Ryan hype tomorrow’s episode of NXT UK, until The Bump goes off air.
