WWE Friday Night Smackdown Live Results (5/22/2020) - Performance Center, Orlando, FL

Happy Memorial Day Weekend! We start the show with a video package in honor of our armed forces, which you can find here. From all of us at Rajah News, we want to thank all those who have served and sacrificed for us all. Thank you.

Are you ready for a good time? AC/DC sings us in as we start up tonight's Smackdown! Michael Cole and Corey Graves welcome us to our show and preview tonight's show, including a mixed tag match with Otis & Mandy Rose versus Dolph & Sonya Deville!

The Dirt Sheet

We start things in the ring with the Dirt Sheet. The Miz and John Morrison run down "Mister Ham in the Bank" Otis and state that they're disgusted by Otis being the MitB champion. They continue to insult Otis, and question why Braun Strowman would even help Otis--referring to last week's main event tag match. The Miz goes on to state that Otis having the MitB contract just makes no sense. Morrison quickly chips in, "Yeah, like Becky Lynch choosing to have a child with Seth Rollins. What? I wouldn't show my face around here, either!" The Miz asks John "what is wrong with you?" then proceeds to get things back on the topic of Braun.

Both men run down Braun, and point out that the "black sheep" of the Wyatt Family, Braun Strowman, was replaced with puppets. The Miz then decides to feature other puppet rejects from the Firefly Fun House, such as Dookie the Diaper Boy (who has a stench more powerful than Braun Strowman), and who can't stop farting. And next up, Mandyquin Rose! Her super power is that she whispers plans into Otis' ears that will help Otis defeat Braun.

Finally, Braun's had enough of the insults and makes his way down to the ring. Braun tosses their chairs out of the ring and gets on the mic. "What's up boys?" Miz and Morrison greet him. Braun continues. "You know what, your show's not half bad. Thanks for having me on the show. Why don't you ask me about Bray Wyatt and his puppets?" The Miz questions Braun, asking "Do you think that Bray Wyatt's done with you?" The Miz goes on to discuss his past feud with Bray, and the depravity and darkness that the Miz encountered in his feud. He then states "luckily, I had John (Cena) to fall back on." Morrison gets on the mic, and things get bad.

Morrison: "You aren't half the man that the Miz is. He might not be as big as you or as strong as you, but you'll never be the man that he is. Look at you, I bet you feel like a real bad ass because you got lucky last week and pinned me in a tag match. But you mess with the M-I-Z, he's gonna come at you like a bag of quarters." Morrison continues to pump up the Miz and how badly he'd beat down Braun, while Miz tries to get Morrison to shut up. Braun asks if this is a challenge, and Morrison answers for him, saying hell yeah it is. Miz: "Damnit." Braun calls for a ref because it's time for Miz to get these hands and we go to commercial!

The Miz vs Braun Strowman

This match starts with nothing but Braun manhandling the Miz. John Morrison at ringside tries to motivate the Miz, but Braun continues to throw Miz around like a doll. Finally after a couple of minutes of being destroyed, Miz pulls the top rope down as Strowman charges, sending the champion to the outside. As the Ref checks on Miz, Morrison runs and hits a jump kick to the champ. Miz mounts some offense outside before taking the action back into the ring. Strowman has Miz up, indicating a powerslam, but the Ref is out of position and misses the Miz raking the eyes! The Miz tries to take control but Braun is fired up and rams Miz into the corner. Corey Graves is calling John Morrisson "Johnny Drip Drip." Strowman clocks Morrison off the apron, hits a running powerslam and picks up the win over the Miz. The Miz was absolutely manhandled during this match.
Your Winner, Braun Strowman!

After the Match

Morrison gets back on the mic and challenges Braun to a handicapped match at Backlash for the WWE Universal Championship. Braun accepts!

Corey Graves reminds us that "Mizzy Miz Miz and Johnny Drip Drip" are two of the most acclaimed rappers in history, then Cole runs down the upcoming matches. We've got two first round Intercontinental matches tonight, and here comes one right now!

AJ Styles vs Shinsuke Nakamura

Finally, AJ Styles has returned to Friday Night Smackdown--the house that AJ Styles built! We learn that AJ was permanently traded to Smackdown as he makes his way down to the ring. We're headed to commercial!

Back from commercial, we see the band tuning up and here comes the King of Strong Style, hailing from Kyoto, Japan, it's the artist known as Shinsuke Nakamura! These two have a storied history, and it wasn't two years ago that Shinsuke was busting AJ's balls! We're reminded that Shinsuke is a two time IC champion and Royal Rumble winner, and that while AJ has held the WWE championship thrice, he's never held the Intercontinental Championship!

The winner of tonight's match takes on Elias next week. The bell rings, and here we go!

Both men lock up, and we're treated to a technical exhibition as both men counter holds and locks. Nakamura takes control early on; AJ reverses it into an arm hold. Nakamura into a waist lock, but AJ slips up and headlocks Nakamura. AJ Styles hits a double chop to the throat. AJ hits to the knee. Nakamura rebounds off the ropes, AJ counters with a kick.

AJ works Nakamura over in the corner, then Irish whips Nakamura across the ring. Nakamura counters and catches AJ in the mount, then sends him to the mat. Again, AJ counters and hits Nakamura. AJ goes for offense but Nakamura counters and hits a stiff kick. AJ counters again and hits the step-up enziguri. AJ in the corner, Nakamura charges but AJ counters. AJ's stuck straddling the middle ropes and Nakamura charges again, connecting and sending AJ to the outside. This is a very good, back and forth match. We head to commercials!

Back from the break, both men are in the ring. Shinsuke is hammering AJ with multiple kicks, finally dropping AJ to the ground. He taunts him, kicking him while he's down. AJ is back up to his feet and fired up, picking up the pace as both men exchange blows. AJ sets up and connects with the Pele Kick, and both men are down! We're reminded that AJ Styles was traded to Smackdown for "future trade considerations." Both men get to their feet and Styles again all over Shinsuke, hitting a hellacious clothesline. Styles pulls Nakamura to his feet, Nakamura charges but AJ rolls and catches Nakamura's leg, logging in the calf crusher for half a minute as Shinsuke writhes in pain! Nakamura grabs the rope, breaking the hold.

Both men to their feet. Shinsuke tried for the sliding knee but AJ counters and gets a two count. AJ picks up Nakamura, but Nakamura hits a quick Michinoku driver and gets a two count. Shinksuke drags AJ to his feet but AJ elbows Shinsuke back. AJ runs but Shinsuke hits a knee to create some distance. Shinsuke sets up the Kinshasa but hits a running knee and lays on AJ for the cover. AJ kicks out at two. Shinsuke gets in the corner and warms up, charging for a Kinshasa but AJ dodges it. AJ goes for a roll up pin but Shinsuke locks AJ in the triangle lock! AJ powers up, standing and turns it into a Styles Clash! AJ Styles pins but Nakamura kicks out at two!

We get replays of the modified Styles Clash as both men roll around on the mat. Both men climb to their feet in opposite corners. AJ heads to the corner but is launched to the apron. AJ sets up for the Phenomenal Forearm but Shinsuke hits him with a kick! Shinsuke charges again, is shoved back, and AJ vaults over the top rope, hitting the Phenomenal Forearm! AJ covers and gets the one, two, three!
Your Winner, and advancing in the IC Title Tournament, AJ Styles!

AJ Styles moves on to round two and will face Elias next week in the semi-finals! The winner of tonight's Hardy/Sheamus matchup will face Daniel Bryan in the semi-finals next week!

After the Match

We're reminded of the new Wild Card Rule Brand to Brand Invitational, then are treated to a clip from Charlotte Flair challenging Bayley last week.

Backstage with Bayley and Sasha Banks

Bayley tells Sasha that she doesn't want her at ringside, and explains that it's because "they" believe that she can't win without Sasha's help. Sasha looks neutral as we cut to a promo for Raw. Charlotte, Nia Jax and Nattie will face off in a triple threat Monday to determine who gets a shot at Asuka. And off to commercials we go!

There's apparently an "Ultimate Tag" show hosted by JJ Watt's and his brothers. Cool

Back from commercials, we're reminded that in three weeks we will be treated to Randy Orton versus Edge in a wrestling match at Backlash!

Cue the woo, it's time for our champion versus champion match!

NXT Women's Champion Charlotte Flair vs WWE Smackdown Women's Champion Bayley

This is a non-title match. Charlotte is out first, followed by Bayley next. Cole notes that Bayley's held the Smackdown title for 224 days now and has beaten Charlotte twice for the Smackdown title and once for the Raw women's title. A very rich history indeed.

The bell rings and our competitors lock up in the middle of the ring. Flair delivers a knee to the gut, then slams Bayley's face into the turnbuckle. She yells "take another one!" and slams Bayley's face into another turnbuckle. Bayley knocks Charlotte down and goes for a quick cover but gets nothing. Bayley mocks Flair's "woo" and strut as Charlotte grins and both women stalk each other around the ring.

Charlotte locks Bayley around the waist; standing switch by Bayley. Charlotte Flair thrown to the ground, Bayley tries a dirty pin with her feet on the second rope. Ref catches her and chastises her, to which Bayley yells "I was just testing you!" Both women counter blows. Bayley whips Charlotte to the corner, then charges her but Charlotte leaps up and hits her with a knee. The action spills outside and the Ref reminds them that they've "got til ten." He begins to count as Charlotte and Bayley fight outside. Charlotte sends Bayley into the barricade. Ref hits 7, Charlotte snatches Michael Cole's headset and yells for Sasha Banks to come out so she can kick her butt, too. Charlotte back in the ring as the Ref counts eight...nine...and we go to commercial with Bayley still laid out ringside with one second to get back in the ring! Oh, the suspense!

We come back from break with Charlotte holding Bayley in a neck lock. Guessing Bayley managed to get to her feet and back into the ring in one second! Charlotte slides to the outside and tries to drag Bayley outside but Bayley kicks Charlotte back, slamming her back into the ringpost. Sasha is watching the action from backstage.

Ringside, Bayley slams Charlotte into the announce table, then the ringside, then takes the action back in the ring. Bayley is relentless with her offense, hammering blows, using the middle rope to choke Charlotte before the Ref breaks it up. Charlotte tries to take control but Bayley counters and continues her offense. Bayley locks a sleeper hold on Charlotte. As the announcers remind us that Charlotte has a triple threat match with Rhea Ripley and Io Shirai, Bayley mocks Charlotte, claiming "this is how we do it on smackdown!"

Bayley charges Flair, who counters and launches Bayley across the room. Bayley with fists, trying to work Flair in the corner. Flair shoves her back and Bayley rolls back. Bayley charges Charlotte in the corner but Charlotte catches her and hits a form of a standing Impaler, driving Bayley's face into the turnbuckle. Charlotte exclaims "this is how we do it on...this is how Charlotte does it!" Flair goes up top and attempts a moonsault; Bayley moves and Charlotte lands on her feet.

Charlotte works Bayley's leg and knees, looking for a Figure 8. Bayley on her back, kicking and punching, keeping Flair back. Bayley gets Flair into the corner then hits a running knee. Bayley climbs to the top rope and dives high for the elbow drop but Flair gets the knees up! Flair to her feet and grabs Bayley's legs, putting her in a wicked Boston Crab that is remniscient of "Lionheart" Chris Jericho's old WCW "Liontamer" hold. Bayley squirms out, drops Flair. Bayley goes up top again and hits the elbow drop. Bayley covers but Flair kicks out. Bayley to her feet, screaming at Michael Cole. "Got somethin' smart to say over there huh?"

Flair to her knees. Bayley hits chop after chop after chop as Flair asks for more. Bayley tells Flair she's sick and hits her again. Bayley attempts a Figure 4 but Flair blocks it. Charlotte sends Bayley to the corner and hits multiple Flair Chops to show her how it's done. Both men tumble out of the corner; Charlotte goes for a victory roll but Bayley counters it and uses the ropes, pinning Charlotte for the win!
Your Winner, Smackdown Women's Champion Bayley!

We're going to commercial but up next we'll have the mixed tag match, Dolph & Sonya Deville vs Otis & Mandy! Stay tuned!

Backstage with Bayley and Sasha Banks

Backstage, Sasha is smothering Bayley with hugs and friendly kisses, telling Bayley how proud she is of her. Bayley accuses Sasha of not feeling that Bayley could do it, then says she was "just kidding, dog." They smile and hug as we cut to ringside!

Dolph Ziggler & Sonya Deville vs Otis & Mandy Rose

Dolph & Deville come out together first. "The Golden Goddess" Mandy Rose comes out wearing what looks like denim cutoff shorts and a denim vest, and is joined by Otis with his MitB case.

The bell rings and the women are starting things off! Correction--they were, but Otis insists starting first. Otis and Dolph grapple but Otis slings Dolph into the corner. Again they grapple and Otis showcases his strength, slamming Dolph. Dolph uses his veteran skills to grab the rope so the Ref forces Otis to back off. Sonya yells that Dolph needs a breather, and tags in. Mandy and Sonya lock up in the ring; Sonya berates Mandy before Mandy hits a modified Lou Thesz press on Sonya! As they duel inside, Dolph attacks Otis from behind and drops him at ringside. Mandy slides out to check on Otis, who tells her she's gotta get back in the ring and we head to break!

Back from break, we've got the women in the ring. Sonya has Mandy on the mat, locked in a form of the Rear-Naked Choke. We're treated to clips of what happened during the commercial--Mandy checking on Otis as the Ref counted, before finally sliding in the ring. Very, very crucial footage, glad they showed us that.

Sonya sends Mandy to the corner and works her over. Mandy starts to fight out of the corner with two rights and a quick roll up. Sonya kicks out at one. Many tries to tag Otis but Sonya blocks her, and gets Mandy down in a headlock in the center of the ring. Otis tries to rally Mandy, but Sonya continues to work Mandy over in the middle of the ring. Sonya hit a wicked kick to Mandy's jaw. Sonya's showing off, doing a little jig, taunting Mandy as she delivers kick after kick.

Mandy runs and rebounds off the ropes, aiming for a kick but Mandy pops up and knocks her down. Both women are down. Mandy makes the hot tag to Otis who comes in fast and pancakes Dolph. He sends Dolph to the corner and hits him. He goes for another charge but Dolph attempts to counter. Otis picks Dolph up and charges him into the corner, backs off, then charges again for another pancake-style splash. Dolph falls back and tags Sonya, forcing Otis out of the ring. Otis continues the assault on Dolph ringside as Mandy fires up and takes it to Sonya. A quick two count, Sonya counters with a running knee to the back of the neck of Mandy and gets the three.
Your Winners, Dolph Ziggler and Sonya Deville

After the Match

Otis rushes in to check on Mandy but Dolph hits a Superkick to an unsuspecting Otis. We get replays of the wicked kick to the back of Mandy's neck as Dolph and Sonya are played out.

Backstage with Jeff Hardy

Jeff talks about how near and dear the IC title is to his heart. He notes that it was the first championship he ever won on his own, and if he can win it again, "everything over the last year would come full circle and what better way to start that journey than beating the bully that tried to tear me down. Ask the universe, and it provides. Sheamus, my path, one last blaze of glory runs right through you!" Jeff's been taking speech classes with Meltzer, it seems. Off to commercial break we go!

In Memory of Shad Gaspard, 1981-2020

We get ten seconds of silence with a card up, in memory of Shad.

Backstage Segment: Forgotten Sons

They warn the tag team division that they're ex vets, and they exist, and then do a little chest thump that was a bit too close to something you'd see from an Aryan group. But moving on!

It's official--Miz & Morrison take on Braun Strowman for the Universal Championship in a handicap match!

Backstage with Miz & Morrison and Renee Young

Renee asks the duo if they think they have a shot. Morrison goes on to state Braun stinks, then quotes Sun Tzu (from The Art of War) and begin their "Hey hey, ho ho! Miz and Morrison!" chant.

Video Package: Jeff Hardy

Inspirational music greets us as we see clips from Jeff's return a couple of weeks ago; he mentioned how he's made mistakes and had high-highs and low lows, etc. We then see Jeff and Sheamus exchanging words, and that Sheamus doesn't think Jeff should be around. Sheamus mentions the fans are tired of the suspensions, arrests, releases, drama etc, as they show mugshots and clips of Jeff's history of troubles. More video shows of them brawling and their bad blood as Michael Cole announces "Jeff Hardy is back!"

Main Event: Jeff Hardy vs Sheamus

Jeff Hardy is out first as, again, Cole mentions that Jeff is asking his fans to stick by his side one last time as he tries for one last push, which means its time for one last commercial break!

We're treated to a video showcasing the history between Randy Orton and Edge in what they're literally billing as "The Greatest Wrestling Match Ever" and using a version of "The Greatest Show" theme song from the Hugh Jackman musical to score the video to.

Sheamus is out as we're finally getting ready to start our main event! We're reminded Jeff's won the IC title four times but it's eluded Sheamus. The bell rings and here we go!

Both men lock up in the corner and the ref breaks it. Jeff jumps up and Sheamus catches him, locking up. Jeff gets Sheamus in a headlock and holds it even as both men fall to the floor. After some writhing, Sheamus works out of it and sends Jeff into the ropes. Jeff grabs the ropes and holds on, causing Sheamus to come over and begin to beat Jeff down against the ropes.

Sheamus yells at Jeff, then sends him into the ropes. Jeff counters and hits a kick to the gut. Hardy again off the ropes but Sheamus bulldozes Jeff down with a shoulder block. Jeff rolls to the apron, and Sheamus wrenches the neck back over the top rope. The Ref breaks it; Sheamus charges Jeff but ends up outside. Hardy does a diving drop kick, sending Sheamus into the announce table. Hardy runs along the apron and dives but Sheamus catches him, and slams Hardy across the announce table. Sheamus yells at Cole for spending "four weeks putting that lump of crap over, what about me?" We head to commercial break with Jeff prone on the announce table, Sheamus flustered with Cole, and the Ref just chillin' in the ring without counting!

We're back, and Sheamus has Jeff in a neck lock, yelling about Jeff's wanting another chance. Jeff tries to fight out of it but Sheamus slams Jeff to the mat. Sheamus drops knee, after knee, after knee on Jeff. He holds the knee on Jeff's face as the Ref counts before breaking it. Jeff struggling, trying to get to his feet, while Sheamus continues to taunt him.

Sheamus continues to control, yelling "it's a slaughter!" Sheamus hits a big clothesline and Jeff is down on his back again. Sheamus: "It's not your day bro, shoulda just stayed home swiggin' another beer bro." Jeff tries to fight back and gets Sheamus into the corner. Sheamus charges Jeff, Jeffi goes up top and hits the Whisper in the Wind. He's slow to cover, and only gets a one.

Sheamus crawls to a corner and Jeff gets to his feet. Jeff encroaches but Sheamus hits a boot to the midsection. Sheamus to his feet, hits the Irish Curse backbreaker on Hardy! And another! And a third! Sheamus yells at Cole and walks about the ring, resting on the ropes, telling Cole "it's a great workout!"

Jeff gets to his feet but is dumped out to the apron. Sheamus hits the Ten Beats of the Badaran (spelling?) on Hardy, then smiles while Jeff lays on the apron. Jeff finally mounts some offense; Sheamus is sent shoulder first into the ring post and Jeff is back in this! Jeff hits an atomic drop, then follows up with a beautiful basement drop kick! Jeff covers but only gets two! Both men up, Jeff goes for the Twist of Fate but Sheamus slides out the ring. Jeff sends Sheamus into the ringside, then walks the barricade and launches himself onto Sheamus!

The Ref yells at them to come in; both men in the ring. Jeff goes up top for the Swanton but Sheamus gets the knees up! Sheamus sends a loud knee shot to Hardy's head but can't get the count. Jeff is seated in the corner; Sheamus in the opposite corner, screaming and charges for the Brogue Kick. Jeff out the corner quick, ducks the kick; Sheamus picks Jeff up but Jeff squirms down and rolls through, getting the three count!
Your Winner and advancing to the IC Tournament semi-finals, Jeff Hardy!
