WWE Friday Night SmackDown Quick Recap (4/23/2021)

For those of you who want just the quick results and don't want the details of matches, this is a quick recap of tonight's show. There are spoilers for tonight's show below. The full results can be found right here and the official preview can be found here as well.

For what it's worth, I've never seen a SmackDown with less than five matches. It was a mediocre show, outside the opening tag match and interesting Aleister Black promo.

WWE Friday Night SmackDown Quick Recap for 4/23/2021

Matches Tonight: 4
  • In what turned out to be a superb, 35 minute match, the team of Cesaro & Daniel Bryan defeated Jey Uso & Seth Rollins. Rollins abandoned his partner near the end of the match, walking off.
  • Our second match was quite short, and saw Tamina shock (and physically abuse) her cousin Nia Jax, picking up a victory. Jax may have injured her jaw or nose or...did Nia Jax break her own face?
  • Apollo Crews successfully defended his Intercontinental Championship against KO, with a little distraction from Commander Azeez (fka Babatunde, Dabbo-Kato).
  • The Mysterios defeated the Alpha Academy in our tag-team main event match.
Miscellaneous Non-Match Segments of Note:
  • Daniel Bryan used promo time before and after the opening tag match to hype Cesaro, Roman's fear of Cesaro, and generally praised Cesaro's athletic and wrestling ability.
  • Sami Zayn stoked more of his feud with Kevin Owens, which apparently didn't end at WrestleMania. Same thing with Seth Rollins antagoning Cesaro, who defeated Rollins at WrestleMania.
  • Bayley will face Bianca Belair at WrestleMania Backlash and yes, that's Backlash's new name.
  • Aleister Black returned with a video promo, telling the story of the "Dark Father" with animation. Based on the video, I think he had an awful choir-boy experience. Seriously, I'm not being facetious--watch it. He turns heel and refer to "you" (not sure if he means priests, or us the viewers) as he insults "you" for being the worst of humanity, etc.
  • The final segment of our show was Roman Reigns responding to Cesaro's challenge. Reigns told Cesaro he's not on his level, but agreed to give Daniel Bryan one more chance with the condition that if Bryan loses, he's banned from SmackDown.
  • Matches announced for next week: Apollo Crews vs Big E for the Intercontinental Championship; Roman Reigns vs Daniel Bryan for the Universal Championship.
