WWE NXT NEW YEAR'S EVIL RESULTS (1/10/2023)
This year's NXT New Year's Evil special themed-event kicks off with the John Cena-narrated "WWE Then. Now. Forever. Together" signature. We then shift to see the Chase University logo and then a shot of Andre Chase hosting class.
He gives his students a homework assignment -- to watch tonight's NXT New Year's Evil show. He then runs down some of the matches while grilling his students.
Tony D'Angelo vs. Dijak
We shoot inside the CWC where Vic Joseph welcomes us to the show and Tony D'Angelo's theme hits. "The Don Of NXT" emerges alongside Stacks and they head to the ring for D'Angelo's singles match.
Booker T joins Joseph on commentary to run down the back-story leading into this match, which pits D'Angelo one-on-one against Dijak. On that note, D'Angelo's theme dies down.
Now the familiar sounds of Dijak's theme plays as the ominous one himself emerges and begins heading to the ring as the screen turns black-and-white. As Dijak settles into the ring, Joseph and Booker are shown on-camera and the duo introduces NXT North American Champion Wes Lee, who is on special guest commentary for this one.
The bell sounds and this one gets off-and-running in a hurry, as D'Angelo takes it to Dijak coming straight out of the gate. The action spills out to the floor, where D'Angelo continues to beat down Dijak while using many of the same cliches used by Corey Graves during Dominic Mysterio's hardened criminal promo segment on Raw last night.
Back in the ring, "The Don of NXT" continues to control the action, taking it to Dijak while yelling at him about crossing "The Family." Dijak shifts the offensive momentum into his favor soon after this and now he is taking it to D'Angelo with punishing offense.
Dijak continues to dominate the offense as it spills out to the floor at ringside. As he works over D'Angelo outside the ring, he goes to whip him into the barricade, only for him to bounce into Stacks. He then quickly turns around and turns Dijak inside-out with a big lariat that pops the crowd.
On that note, we head to a mid-match commercial break as "The Don of NXT" controls the action, taking it to Dijak as they head back into the ring. When we return from the break, we see footage from during the break of Dijak chaining Stacks to the ring ropes before taking over on offense on D'Angelo inside the ring.
As D'Angelo starts to take over again after clotheslining Dijak to shift things back into his favor, we hear Booker T and Wes Lee bantering back-and-forth on commentary. Dijak shifts things right back into his favor after a big super-kick sets up his High Justice spot. He goes for the cover but somehow D'Angelo kicks out after the count of two.
The fans break out into a loud "This is Awesome" chant after that. Stacks tries getting into the ring and while chained to the ropes, yells about wanting to sacrifice himself for D'Angelo and The Family. Things backfire, however, and D'Angelo ends up walking into the big boot from Dijak for the pin fall victory. Good opener.
Winner: Dijak
McKenzie Mitchell Talks To Toxic Attraction
After the commentators talk about Dijak setting himself up for a NXT North American Championship opportunity against Wes Lee, things shift to the backstage area where McKenzie Mitchell is standing by with Toxic Attraction.
Gigi Dolin and Jacy Jane then talks about the battle royal tonight to determine the next challenger to the title and when asked what they'll do if things come down to just the two of them in the battle royal, they claim we'll hear, "...and your WINNERS, Toxic Attraction."
Jinder Mahal Returns, Takes Out The Creed Brothers
Back inside the CWC, Sanga heads to the ring. Collectively known as Indus Sher, only Sanga is shown as Veer is nowhere to be seen. Already in the ring are The Creed Brothers.
The three go back-and-forth on the mic about how this could become a handicap match instead when out of nowhere, a returning Jinder Mahal strikes from behind and takes out Julius and Brutus Creed.
Mahal then gets on the mic and says, "Veer and Sanga fight for respect ...but I don't." With The Creed Brothers left laying, Mahal and Sanga stand over the two as their theme plays to end the in-ring segment.
Pretty Deadly Backstage With The New Day
Now we shoot backstage where Pretty Deadly are shown when in walks New Day. The two teams banter back-and-forth ahead of the Pretty Deadly gauntlet match for a shot at the NXT Tag-Team Championships later tonight and then we head to another commercial break.
Valentina Feroz Asks Sanga, Jinder Mahal About What Just Happened
Valentina Feroz confronts Sanga backstage when we return from the commercial break. She asks him if this is what Indus Sher is all about as he and Jinder Mahal walk by. She is told it is and they leave. Another competitor in the women's battle royal tonight tells her that she should be focusing on that right now.
NXT Tag-Team Title Eliminator Gauntlet
Brian Williams & Jimmy Jackson vs. Pretty Deadly
We head back inside the CWC where Pretty Deadly duo Elton Prince & Kit Wilson come to the ring and get on the microphone ahead of their gauntlet match to earn a title shot at NXT Tag-Team Champions The New Day.
They talk about picking three of the best teams to beat tonight in this gauntlet match to prove they deserve the next title opportunity.
With that said, the old Rockers theme music plays as Brian Williams and Jimmy Jackson make their way to the ring. Prince and Wilson squash them and pick up a quick, easy victory.
Winners: Pretty Deadly
Edris Enofe & Malik Blade vs. Pretty Deadly
Now New Day comes out and gets on the mic and say they knew Pretty Deadly was going to try and do this. They tell the duo that if they want to earn a title shot, they have to beat two more legitimate teams which they will pick.
With that said, the first team is announced and out comes the duo of Edris Enofe and Malik Blade. The bell sounds and immediately Enofe and Blade are showing Pretty Deadly that they are a different breed. Enofe takes it to the duo by himself.
They knock Pretty Deadly out to the floor and stand tall in the ring as the crowd breaks out into a loud "NXT! NXT!" chant. On that note, we head to a mid-match commercial break.
When we return from the break, we see the match still in progress with Blade dominating the action and taking it to Pretty Deadly. We see a crazy top-rope high spot into a near fall attempt, however the match continues.
From there, with one member of Pretty Deadly in the ring getting cradled up for a pin attempt, the other member rolls the duo from the floor and Pretty Deadly get the win. With the win, they advance to the final leg of the gauntlet.
Winners: Pretty Deadly
Gallus vs. Pretty Deadly
The big duo are announced by New Day as the next duo in the match. Instead, Gallus are shown on the big screen and they take out the duo and come out in their place. They walk past New Day as Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods look shocked.
We see the duo hit the ring and immediately start beating down the duo of Pretty Deadly as the fans chant "Gallus! Gallus!" It isn't much longer after this that Gallus flattens the heel duo and scores the easy pin fall victory to win the gauntlet.
Winners of the NXT Tag-Team Championship Eliminator Gauntlet: Gallus
Julius Creed Wants A Piece Of Jinder Mahal
Ivy Nile and Julius Creed are shown backstage. Creed complains to Nile about how he doesn't care that Jinder Mahal is a former WWE Champion, he claims he's gonna knock his teeth out. Nile says she's got a battle royal to get ready for. Julius says he's got a match to get made. We head to a commercial break.
"The Center Of The Universe" Tiffany Stratton Is Back
After a quick Carmelo Hayes and Trick Williams segment where Carmelo says it is he, not Apollo Crews, who is next in line for the NXT Championship, we head back inside the CWC where Tiffany Stratton makes her return and heads to the ring.
Stratton asks how badly everyone missed her. She then proceeds to do her Valley Girl shtick as she refers to herself as NXT's biggest superstar. She can't blame them for feeling so inferior, she's a revelation.
She claims to have picked up the business in the past five months faster than anyone. She says she's also spent the last months watching every woman attempt to fill her shoes and fail. She says 2023 can now officially begin because "The Center of the Universe" is back. Her theme plays again to end the segment.
After this we see hype for the NXT title showdown between Bron Breakker and Grayson Waller before heading to another commercial break.
Kayden Carter, Katana Chance & Tiffany Stratton Backstage
Kayden Carter, Katana Chance are shown walking in the locker room when they are approached and asked about setting the new women's record as tag champs. They say they're focused on breaking the men's tag champ record now.
We see someone else run into Tiffany Stratton and attempt to get a quick word from her as well, however she blows the interviewer off and we head back inside the CWC.
NXT Championship
Bron Breakker (C) vs. Grayson Waller
Will The Grayson Waller Effect lead to NXT gold? It's time to find out.
We hear the familiar sounds of Grayson Waller's theme music and the challenger makes his way out and heads to the ring to a chorus of boos from the Orlando crowd. He settles inside the ring and his music dies down.
Now the theme for the reigning, defending NXT Champion plays and out comes Bron Breakker barking it up, with the crowd echo'ing said-barks. Vic Joseph reminds us that Breakker won the title at this event last year by beating Tommaso Ciampa.
Both competitors have settled in the ring. The bell sounds. The final pre-match ring introductions are handled. The bell sounds again and we're off-and-running with this NXT Championship contest here at NXT New Year's Evil 2023.
We see Breakker dominating Waller early on, shucking him down to the mat off the opening lock-up. He also avoids an attempt by Waller to lure him out of the ring and back into the ring to hit him with an elbow drop coming in.
Instead, Waller elbows the mat and stands up into a big clothesline from Breakker. Breakker then hoists Waller up for a delayed suplex. The fans continue with loud, loud "Let's go Waller!" / "Let's go Breakker!" dueling chants throughout all of this action.
Grayson eventually catches Breakker in a choke, but Breakker avoids going to sleep. Waller connects with a big suplex and goes for the cover but Breakker kicks out after the count of two.
Waller ends up falling victim to a big belly-to-belly toss from the champ, which shifts the momentum back into Breakker's favor. He hits a big tilt-a-whirl slam that elicits some Rick Steiner "Dog-Faced Gremlin"-style barks.
As Waller starts to take back over, we see the middle rope has broken and is just laying limp around the ring apron. As the referee checks on Bron Breakker in the corner and Grayson Waller is shown smiling, Vic Joseph tells us on commentary that the ring rope situation needs to be addressed just as we head into a mid-match commercial break.
When we return from the break, we see that the ring-rope situation has, in fact, been addressed and fixed. The action is still in progress inside the squared circle, with the challenger Grayson Waller dominating the offense and taking the fight to NXT Champion Bron Breakker as the fans try and rally behind the title-holder.
With Grayson dominating the action, he looks to humiliate Breakker with a Steiner Recliner submission, however the champs stands up while in the hold and slams his way out of it. From there, Breakker starts to take over and beat down Waller with ease. He hits a bulldog off the top-rope and then takes the straps down.
Breakker lets out a war scream and then backs into a corner and waits for Waller to get up. When he does, Breakker charges at him, only for Waller to side-step him. Waller takes over after this and nearly turns Breakker inside-out for a close near fall attempt.
Waller ends up crashing out to the floor when the middle rope and turnbuckle snaps off yet again as he was attempting to walk the ropes. Waller is down outside the ring while Breakker is out inside the ring. The referee begins his count and ends up counting out Waller. Bron Breakker retains via count out. The fans boo. Odd.
Winner and STILL NXT Champion: Bron Breakker
McKenzie Mitchell Talks To NXT Women's Champion Roxanne Perez
Waller yells and refuses help as he holds his neck and officials check on him. The fans appear to be chanting "Bullsh*t" in the background. We shoot backstage where McKenzie Mitchell is standing by with NXT Women's Champion Roxanne Perez.
She asks Perez who she wants to win the battle royal to determine her next challenger tonight. She says Cora Jade. Mitchell asks if she's kidding. Perez laughs and says she is. She asks the champ if she's worried about Toxic Attraction's threats. She says she is. She says it's 20 women and she can't wait to watch. Mitchell thanks her and the interview segment ends.
Hank Walker vs. Charlie Dempsey
We shoot to a video package that shows the history between Drew Gulak and Hank Walker and how that has played out over the past several weeks, leading to tonight's showdown between Hank Walker and Charlie Dempsey. We head to another commercial break after the video wraps up.
As we return, we see Axiom and Apollo Crews talking about joining forces. We return inside the CWC and Hank Walker's theme hits and the big man is shown in the ring with Drew Gulak talking into his ear.
Vic Joseph informs us that the ring ropes have been reinforced since the incident in the previous contest. With Walker settled into the ring, his music dies down and now Charlie Dempsey's theme hits to bring him out.
The bell sounds and we're off-and-running with this one. After some back-and-forth action, we see Walker and Dempsey end up on the floor. As they do, we see both guys end up laid out while Vic Joseph points out a graphic on the screen that reveals breaking news from Shawn Michaels coming later tonight.
Back in the ring, we see Dempsey working Walker over on the mat with submission attempts. Gulak ends up explaining to Walker how to make it to the ropes, however just another moment later and Dempsey has Walker tied up again and this time he gets the win.
Winner: Charlie Dempsey
Jinder Mahal vs. Julius Creed
A vignette for NXT Anonymous is shown lurking around the scene in NXT after a promotional graphic airs hyping Tyler Bate's return for next week's show. From there, we head back inside the CWC and Jinder Mahal makes his way out and heads to the ring.
As he heads to the ring, footage is shown of his surprise return earlier in the evening where he attacked The Creed Brothers from behind and left Brutus Creed laid out. This led to Julius Creed seeking a showdown with Mahal tonight.
Already in the ring is Julius Creed, who immediately goes after Mahal as soon as the bell sounds to get this one off-and-running. Julius actually fares well early on, launching Mahal out to the floor and standing tall in the ring. That is how we leave things as we head into a mid-match commercial break.
When we return from the break, we see Julius attempting to climb to the top-rope with Mahal, but Mahal shoves him off. Creed fights back and ends up bringing Mahal down the hard way, connecting with a super-plex for a close near fall.
"The Modern Day Maharaja" drops some knees on the face of Creed over-and-over again in the corner of the ring and then the camera shows a tight shot of The Creed Brother with blood pouring out of his mouth. The fans try and rally behind him and it starts to bring Julius back to life. Mahal blasts him with a jumping knee that slows down his momentum.
Creed ends up connecting with a t-bone suplex a few minutes later to buy himself some much-needed time to recover. He does so and then both guys make it back to their feet simultaneously and start duking it out. Creed hits another suplex for a pin attempt, but Mahal kicks out after the count of two.
We see Creed hit a big lariat. He heads to the top-rope to finish off Mahal with a shooting star press, however he is distracted by Sanga, who jumps on the ring apron. The ref gets Sanga down and Creed eventually goes for his move, but misses and ends up getting his head kicked off by Mahal for the finish. Mahal gets the win.
Winner: Jinder Mahal
Brooks Jensen & Josh Briggs React To Gallus' Attack
We see Brooks Jensen and Josh Briggs backstage nursing their wounds as they talk to each other and two of their friends about being attacked by Gallus earlier in the show. They talk about gaining revenge over the duo. Their lady friends then head out to get ready for their participation in the 20 woman battle royal main event.
20-Woman No. 1 Contender Battle Royal
Cora Jade's theme hits as we return inside the CWC. As "The Mean Girl of NXT" makes her way to the ring, we head to a pre-match commercial break. Our 20-woman battle royal to determine the next challenger to the NXT Women's Championship held by Roxanne Perez is up next.
As we settle back in from the break, we see a vignette for Stevie Turner is shown and she tells us that her stream is up and running. She says she is our resident data collector and says many may recognize her from NXT UK. She says she's always two levels above and two steps ahead.
From there, we return inside the CWC where the ring is filled up with the 20-women scheduled to participate in the main event battle royal. The bell sounds and we're off-and-running with our final match of the evening here at NXT New Year's Evil 2023.
Immediately Cora Jade is thrown out and eliminated. The crowd erupts and Vic Joseph sells it big on commentary. We see several additional eliminations within a span of two minutes and then we shift gears and head to our final commercial break of the evening as the match continues.
As we return from the break we see Indi Hartwell eliminated. We're down to our final nine competitors in the ring in this battle royal to determine the next challenger to NXT Women's Champion Roxanne Perez. Lopez is eliminated moments later. As is another participant, leaving seven remaining.
Another quick pair of eliminations takes the total remaining down to five. Alba Fyre makes an elimination. We're down to Fyre, Toxic Attraction and Lyra Valkyria. The four women duke it out in the middle of the ring. Valkyria takes Fyre out and eliminates her with her legs. Valkyria ends up eliminated moments later due to interference.
We're down to only Toxic Attraction remaining, with Jacy Jane and Gigi Dolin celebrating like they each share the victory. Jacy Jane offers to eliminate herself but Gigi Dolin yells at her to stop. Jane then does and blasts her with a kick.
The two start to go at it with fans chanting for Jane. They each fight it out outside the ring ropes on the ring apron. They climb to the top-rope and we see Jane looking for a super-plex elimination, which Dolin blocks.
They end up each landing a big blow while on the top-rope and they each fall down below on opposing sides of the ring for a simultaneous elimination. Opposing referees announce each of them as the winner.
They start arguing among themselves about who the real winner is. Shady finishes in two of the two big main events here tonight. The feedback should be interesting.
After the referees talk, we see both Jacy Jane and Gigi Dolin announced as the co-winners of the battle royal. Each will presumably advance to challenge Roxanne Perez in the next NXT Women's Championship showdown. With that in mind, Perez's theme hits and out she comes.
Shawn Michaels' Breaking News Is ...
The triple-threat match for NXT Vengeance Day on Saturday, February 4, 2023 is announced. Shawn Michaels is shown with Bron Breakker and Grayson Waller seated by him.
He says the way their match ended tonight was not how their story ends. They each argue and nearly get into it. HBK tells them there will be a decisive winner one way or the other because the two will meet inside a steel cage for the title at Vengeance Day. That's how this week's show goes off the air. Thanks for joining us.
