... and we're off!
The WWE Payback Kickoff Show is officially underway on all of WWE's social media channels, as well as streaming on the WWE Network. The pre-show hosts welcome us to the event and the final hype for tonight's matches begins.
WWE Payback PPV Card Insight & Analysis
The panel for the pre-show consists of Kayla Braxton, Booker T, Jerry Lawler, JBL and Peter Rosenberg, and the five "expert panelists" immediately dive into some of the action in store for tonight's show.
The group begins to give their in-depth analysis, helping fans get a better understanding of the stories behind some of the matches scheduled for the show this evening.
As always, throughout the discussion the panel sets up the video packages for each match, which are introduced and played, providing the usual bad-ass video summary of each rivalry leading into tonight's PPV.
R-Truth Apologizes For Being Late To Raw Talk
As the Kickoff Show continues, the broadcast breaks from the "next match, analysis, video package" formula momentarily as R-Truth appears to kill some ti...provide some comedic relief on the WWE Payback Kickoff Show.
The former 200+ time WWE 24/7 Champion joins the panel on the pre-show podium and apologizes for being late to this, the Raw Talk show for this week.
The rest of the panel laugh and try and get Truth to realize that Raw Talk isn't until tomorrow, or next week, depending on if it was Booker or Kayla trying to rationalize with Lil Jimmy's former best friend.
More WWE Payback PPV Card Insight & Analysis
After the Truth fun wraps up, the panel gets back to the aforementioned set-up, pay-off, move-on formula.
This time they get back into the mix starting off with focusing on Big E.'s continued transition from the powerhouse of a comedy trio to the serious singles Superstar rising through the ranks, before moving on to provide insight into additional matches on tonight's card.
The Riott Squad vs. The Ilconics
The announce trio of Tom Phillips, Samoa Joe and Byron Saxton are introduced as the expert panel sends it down to ringside where it's time for things to get underway inside the ring for the first time tonight.
The commentary trio welcomes us to the ringside area as the theme music of The Riott Squad begins playing and the team of Ruby Riott and Liv Morgan begin making their way down to the squared circle.
Out next are their opponents for tonight's lone pre-show contest, The Ilconics. Billie Kay and Peyton Royce start heading down to the ring, cutting a quick promo as they make their ring walk.
The ThunderDome live crowd appears and the Amway Center in Orlando, Florida is now filled with thousands of members of the WWE Universe patched in via the groundbreaking new virtual fan experience.
The bell sounds and here we go with our first official match of the evening here at the WWE Payback 2020 event. The Riott Squad jumps off to an early offensive lead, with Morgan getting the better of some early exchanges before tagging Riott in.
That is where things start to go downhill for The Riott Squad. Royce takes over the offensive momentum in the ring and takes it to Riott. She tags in Kay, who picks up where Royce left off, keeping Riott grounded and near their half of the ring.
She chokes Riott with her boot in The Ilconics corner of the ring and then takes her down to the mat where she goes to work on the arm of Riott, isolating the limb and focusing her attack there for the time being.
Riott finally makes it to her side of the ring, however The Ilconics knock Morgan off the apron when Riott is distracted in the ring. When she turns to make the tag and sees Morgan on the floor instead of the apron, she looks upset and The Ilconics play to that, adding fuel to the fire by convincing her that Morgan bailed on her and left her alone.
As Riott is forced to deal with the continued beatdown being delivered by Royce and Kay, we see Morgan still pacing around on the floor at ringside. When Riott finally knocks both Ilconics off their feet and looks to her corner, Morgan sprints up to the ring apron and tags in.
Morgan takes the hot tag and enters the ring like a woman possessed, going to work on The Ilconics like a bat out of hell. She gets Royce in the corner on the mat and hits a double stomp off the ropes for a near fall. We see replays of that spot after Royce kicks out at two, and afterwards, she is selling her shoulder and the announcers are also putting over that match story-point.
Meanwhile, Riott appears to have re-charged her physical batteries on the ring apron after a lengthy opening bid in this contest, and Morgan realizes this as well as she tags in the fellow Riott Squad member. Riott comes in and she and Morgan hit the Deja Vu double-team finisher. Riott covers Kay for the pin, however Royce is in to break it up. Morgan drags Riott over to their corner so she can tag in.
Morgan is in, however she is immediately hit with a double-team assault by Kay and Royce. Morgan fares well regardless, taking out one of The Ilconics and decking the other, covering her for a near fall but only getting two. Morgan hits a dropping double-knees and Riott follows up with the Riott Kick for the pin fall victory.
Winners: The Riott Squad
The Kickoff Show Concludes, PPV Begins
We shoot back to the panel where Ruby Riott and Liv Morgan, fresh off their victory over The Ilconics, join the exert panelists to show-off their renewed sense of closeness after assuring each other that the only thing that has come between them as of late was Peyton Royce and Billie Kay. They embrace with excitement and head off.
After the panel has some fun reacting to the enthusiastic Riott Squad, they get back into some final pre-match insight and expert analysis, setting up the video packages for the Randy Orton vs. Keith Lee and the WWE Universal Championship Triple-Threat main event between Roman Reigns, Braun Strowman and "The Fiend" Bray Wyatt.
From there, the Kickoff Show wraps up and it's time to switch over to the main card, as the WWE Payback 2020 pay-per-view is now officially underway inside the Amway Center in Orlando, FL.
WWE United States Championship
Apollo Crews (c) vs. Bobby Lashley
Our first of three championship contests scheduled for tonight's WWE Payback 2020 pay-per-view will be kicking things off inside the ring on the main card, as the scheduled WWE United States Championship match will be the opening bout.
The champion, Apollo Crews and challenger, Bobby Lashley, have both made their respective walks to the ring, the final pre-match introductions are in the rear-view mirror and the bell sounds to kick off action inside the ring with our first of seven advertised matches.
Lashley takes Crews down with a waist lock off the opening lock-up to start the match. Crews fights out and follows up with a beautiful standing drop-kick. As he starts to build some momentum, Lashley stops him dead in his tracks with brute force and starts to take over.
Apollo fights his way back, however and hits another standing drop-kick that sends Lashley sailing out to the floor at ringside. He hits a standing moonsault on Lashley off the ring apron. We see MVP and Shelton Benjamin of The Hurt Business get in Crews' face for a distraction. This allows Lashley to recover and take over on offense after driving Crews into the steel ring post.
We see Lashley follow-up with a fall-away slam and a shoulder tackle in the corner. Lashley attempted a suplex, but Crews slipped out the back and hit an enziguri. Lashley quickly recovers and takes back over. Crews gets in another brief offensive run and then the finish comes when Lashley locks Apollo in the Full Nelson and the champ has no choice but to tap out. We have ourselves a new WWE United States Champion.
After the victory, Lashley is joined by his fellow Hurt Business members MVP and Shelton Benjamin, who bring him his new United States Championship and a camera-man, as this is a photo-op moment. A new champion is crowned in our PPV opener here at WWE Payback.
Winner and NEW WWE United States Champion: Bobby Lashley
Backstage: Kayla Braxton Interviews Paul Heyman
After the match, highlights of the segment from the go-home edition of Friday Night SmackDown that saw Roman Reigns essentially become the newest "Paul Heyman Guy" air and then we shoot backstage.
We see Kayla Braxton outside of the locker room of "The Big Dog" Roman Reigns when out walks Paul Heyman. Braxton asks if Reigns is Heyman's newest client. Heyman talks around the question and hypes the triple-threat match tonight and the spoiler that we should all believe in -- Roman Reigns walking out as the WWE Universal Champion.
JBL Talks To Keith Lee About Randy Orton
We then remain backstage for another segment, this time in the locker room of "Limitless" Keith Lee. Lee is standing in the locker room when in walks JBL fresh off his seat at the expert panel on the WWE Payback Kickoff Show.
JBL and "Limitless" Lee pal around for a moment or so and then the segment ends when JBL turns serious and tells Lee just how dangerous "The Viper" Randy Orton truly is.
Sheamus vs. Big E.
From there we are shown highlights from the latest Talking Smack post-show for Friday Night SmackDown, which shows Big E. talking about just how serious he is about his ongoing run in the singles division.
After the Talking Smack clip wraps up, we head back inside the Amway Center in Orlando, FL. as the familiar theme of Sheamus plays and "The Celtic Warrior" makes his way down to the ring. As he enters the ring, an "earlier today" backstage promo from Sheamus airs, where he addresses Big E. thinking it's his time to shine as an individual instead of one member of a group in The New Day. He claims Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods weren't holding him back, they were propping him up and now it's his time to fall.
"Awwww ThunderDome ... don't you dare be sour! Clap for your 8-time tag-team champs and FEEL THE POWERRRR!!" It's a new day, yes it is ... and it's one where Big E. makes his way to the ring as a lone jolly man in purple, instead of one-of-three jolly men in purple. The announcers plug The New Day: Feel The Power podcast as Big E. finishes up his ring entrance.
The bell sounds and Bg E. and Sheamus lock up, with Big E. pushing Sheamus into the corner and giving a clean break when the referee calls for it. They lock up and the same thing happens again, as Big E. is out-muscling Sheamus here in the early goings of this contest.
The early goings of this one sees Sheamus dominating the action after the initial flurry from Big E. This lasts for several minutes until Big E. fights his way back into a competitive position in the bout. Big E. starts to get a bit too comfortable on offense, as he starts having some fun, which Corey Graves is quick to point out on commentary is one of his main issues in establishing himself as a serious singles superstar in WWE.
Graves is forced to eat his words, as Big E. continues to fire up and eventually takes out "The Celtic Warrior", picking up the win via pin fall and then taunting Graves to his face at the commentary desk after the match.
Winner: Big E.
King Corbin vs. Matt Riddle
After a pre-match interview backstage, we head back to the ring where it's time for another one-on-one non-title singles match, with King Corbin going up against "The King of Bros."
Corbin makes his way down to the ring and out comes his opponent for this evening, Matt Riddle. As Riddle goes to do his jumping splits that slides off his flip-flops, in mid-air he is blasted with a clothesline from a Corbin who comes through the pyro in the ring.
As Corbin beats Riddle down outside the ring, he finally rolls Riddle back into the ring where a replay of how this match started is shown. Corbin slaps a rear chin lock on Riddle to slow things down as he settles into the offensive lead.
Corbin starts to pick up the intensity now, punishing the barefoot bro'ster with a barrage of bruising offense. A big boot from Corbin and now he looks for his finisher early, but doesn't get it.
Riddle starts to fire up now and begins making his comeback on offense. Riddle hits two big spots, including a Bro-ment of Silence and the Bro To Sleep before finishing off Corbin with his Floating Bro for the pin fall victory.
Winner: Matt Riddle
WWE Women's Tag-Team Championships
Sasha Banks & Bayley (c) vs. Shayna Baszler & Nia Jax
The ring is cleared and it's time for our next bout of the evening, and it will be the second contest that will feature a world championship up-for-grabs.
The WWE Women's Tag-Team Champions begin making their way down to the ring, as Sasha Banks and Bayley will defend their titles against Shayna Baszler and Nia Jax next.
With that said, the former bitter rivals turned allies with a common goal make their walk to the ring and with the challengers ready, the ref holds the tag titles up to show what everyone is fighting for and then calls for the bell.
Jax tells Baszler to follow her lead. Baszler ignores her and tags herself in before Jax can even take one step forward. "The Queen of Spades" goes to work on Banks with vicious kicks, backing "The Boss" into the corner.
Banks jumps up on the back of Baszler, but Baszler uses a handful of Smurf-colored hair to send Banks down to the mat with authority. Banks tags out and Bayley comes in to the same fate, with Baszler continuing to dominate on offense.
As Baszler and Bayley clinch and grapple while standing, they knock Jax off the ring apron and she lands hard on the ground below at ringside. Back in the ring, Bayley gets in some offense on Baszler and tags Banks back in.
Banks looks for three amigos as an homage to Eddie Guerrero, but only does two before tagging Bayley back into the bout.
Jax finally sees her first involvement in the bout now as Baszler tags her in and she immediately starts dominating the action, using her size and strength to rag-doll her smaller opposition. She takes it to Banks and then Bayley, hitting a big leg-drop on Bayley before tagging Baszler back in.
Baszler hits a knee-lift and then some running baseball slide kicks into Bayley and Banks in opposing corners of the ring. She hoists Banks up and hits a big slam before tagging Jax in. Baszler and Jax are starting to work together and are expressing their confidence as they start to see the WWE Women's Tag-Team Championships in their reach.
Jax lifts Banks up but "The Boss" shifts her weight on her way up and comes down with a X-Pac face-buster style move that drives Jax's face into the mat. The announcers question if Jax suffered a broken nose from that spot. Banks and Bayley fire up on offense hitting some double-team spots and a big frog-splash off the top for a pin fall attempt that is broken up.
Now Banks and Bayley are starting to show signs of being discouraged as follow-up efforts still aren't enough to finish off the challengers. They fight on regardless, hitting a double back body drop on Jax. They look to lock Baszler in her own move, but "The Queen of Spades' fights her way out. Banks is in the Muta Lock and Bayley is in the Karifuda Clutch. Baszler has both champs locked up simaltaneously by herself. Bayley taps out. We have new champs!
Winners and NEW WWE Women's Tag-Team Champions: Shayna Baszler & Nia Jax
Keith Lee vs. Randy Orton
The video package for our next match, Keith Lee vs.Randy Orton, is introduced after a quick in-ring post-match interview with the new WWE Women's Tag-Team Champions Shayna Baszler and Nia Jax.
"Limitless" Lee and "Viper" Orton is up next. "Oh bask in his glory... for he is... Limitless." Keith Lee makes his way to the stage as his music sounds in the arena. Lee makes his way down the ramp towards the ring for our next match of the evening.
After hearing voices in his head that talk to him, "The Viper's" music cuts off, the bell sounds and this match is now officially underway. To start things off, Orton immediately comes over and snatches Lee up in a side headlock. A crossbody by Lee flattens Orton who immediately rolls out of the ring.
Lee watches Orton climb the apron and return to the ring. "My name is Randy Orton, I am the legend killer, and I demand your respect!" Orton shouts as he delivers a chop to Lee. Lee begins to pump up with each chop delivered. Orton grabs Lee, Lee sends Orton into the corner, as he comes back at Lee, Lee delivers Grizzly Magnum.
Lee goes shoulder first into the steel ring post as Orton side-steps him and he flies through for the brutal impact. Orton heads out of the ring, landing Lee on the announce table. Orton re-enters the ring, rolling around with a smirk on his face. The referee gets to the count of eight. Orton waiting with a stomp for Lee.
Orton is launched out of the ring with one shove by Keith Lee from the center of the ring. Yeah, dude has power. "Limitless" Lee heads out and delivers the same bodyslam to the announce table that Orton just delivered. Lee throws Orton back into the ring. Lee goes to enter the ring, Orton grabs Lee at the count of eight with a DDT delivered by Orton. Orton looks ecstatic as he opens his arms wide, the crowd boos. "The Viper" drops to the canvas, pounding his fists as he gets reved up for RKO. Lee grabs Orton with a Spirit Bomb and the cover for the three count out of nowhere.
Samoa Joe sells this on commentary like an enormous upset.
Winner: Keith Lee
Backstage: Kayla Braxton Checks In With Paul Heyman Again
For the second time this evening, Kayla Braxton catches up with Paul Heyman backstage in the locker room area of "The Big Dog" Roman Reigns.
Braxton again tries to find out if Reigns has signed the contract yet to compete in the triple-threat main event for the Universal Championship tonight.
Heyman tells her to calm down before reminding her that just as Reigns said on SmackDown, he would be here tonight -- and he is.
He reminds Braxton that he also gave a spoiler about leaving with the Universal Title -- which he will. Heyman asks her if she's happy in sarcastic fashion to end the segment.
Rey & Dominik Mysterio vs. Seth Rollins & Murphy
The video package for our next bout of the evening, which will be a tag-team contest, is introduced. Up next is Rey and Dominik Mysterio against the team of Seth Rollins and Murphy.
Back live, "The Monday Night Messiah" Seth Rollins and Murphy make their way down the ramp towards the ring. Rollins and Murphy enter the ring and await their opponents. Their music fades down.
"Booya-kah, booya-kah! 6-1-9! Rey Mysterio!" plays and out comes the Mysterio duo -- Rey and Dominik. The father-and-son duo make their way down to the squared circle and once they get in the ring, Rollins and Murphy immediately start taunting them.
The announcers point out how cocky and confident Rollins looks. The bell sounds and both Mysterio's sprint across the ring, with Dominik taking out Murphy and Rey taking out Seth. Things calm down and with Dominik established as the legal man in the ring starting for his team, Seth tells Murphy to tag him in because he wants a piece of Dominik.
The two engage and to the surprise of "The Monday Night Messiah," Dominik gets the better of their early offensive exchanges, finishing off with a flying splash that sends Rollins out to the floor to regroup after blowing off some steam by way of temper-tantrum. Rollins rolls back in and tags Murphy in to give it a shot.
Rey Rey tags in and beats down Murphy before being audibly heard on the broadcast shouting over the piped-in crowd noise at Rollins to get his ass in here. Rollins obliges, as Murphy tags him in. Rollins and Mysterio get after it right away, with Rey's quickness and offensive creativity being the difference-maker in their initial exchanges. A big flying gut-buster from Rollins slows down Mysterio's momentum.
Seth blind tags Murphy and then launches Rey under the bottom rope, where he crashes into the announce table where Murphy takes over, delivering some shots to Rey before rolling him back in the ring to continue his offensive onslaught. Dominik ends up tagging in and Seth immediately goes to work on him. Rollins stomps the body of Dominik. Rollins tags in Murphy. Double-team action by Murphy and Rollins. Murphy assists Dominik back to his feet, delivering multiple strikes. Murphy with a snap-suplex for the cover, Dominik kicks out once again. Murphy with an abdomenal stretch as Dominik shouts in pain.
Finally, Dom fights his way out and is looking for the tag to Rey. Murphy grabs Dominik and drags him back to his corner, tagging in Seth. Seth stomps the hand of Dominik as Rey shouts from the corner, "let him get up!" Rollins shouts, "you wanted to dance with the big boys" he adds, as he continues to verbally taunt his fallen opposition.
Dominik attempting to get to the corner again. Murphy trying to do damage on the outside, Dominik sends Murphy into the barricade. Rollins tries to jump from the apron onto Dominik who side steps, Rollins slamming into the barricade. Dominik crawls across the ring to tag Rey. Dominik kicks Rollins off, Rey makes the tag. Rey comes in hot, sending Rollins to the opposite side of the ring. Rey on the apron, sending Rollins face-first into the top turnbuckle. Moonsault by Rey for the two count on Rollins. The intensity and pace in the match is picking up now.
Rollins demands Murphy kick him in the head, but Murphy misses and blasts Rollins. Rey and Dom capitalize, firing up with fast-paced double-team offense culminating with Dominik hitting a 6-1-9 and a west coast pop on Murphy and scoring the pin fall to give he and his father the victory.
Winners: Rey & Dominik Mysterio
After The Match: Seth Rollins Walks Away From Murphy
After scoring the pin, Dominik is joined by a proud papa, as Rey re-enters the ring to celebrate the hard-fought victory over their longtime rivals in this tag-team contest.
Outside of the ring there is a different vibe, as Rollins stares at Murphy in disbelief/anger. He wipes his face and is clearly angry.
"The Monday Night Messiah" walks away from Murphy and heads to the back, leaving him out there by himself.
WWE Universal Championship
"The Fiend" Bray Wyatt (c) vs. Braun Strowman vs. Roman Reigns
The video package airs for the WWE Universal Championship triple-threat main event. Up next is "The Fiend" Bray Wyatt defending his title against Braun Strowman and Roman Reigns in a No Disqualification, No Count-Out and No Holds Barred match here in the WWE Payback 2020 pay-per-view main event.
Greg Hamilton, the ring announcer for our main event, begins the official introductions for our final contest of the evening. Making his way to the ring first is the reigning, defending WWE Universal Champion "The Fiend" Bray Wyatt. His ring entrance never gets old. Ever. Always good to help establish a "big match feel."
Before "The Fiend" finishes his entrance, as the lights are still off and red lasers and strobe lights are flickering and flashing, out of nowhere "The Monster Among Men" surfaces -- already in the ring -- knocking "The Fiend" nearly out of his shoes.
The bell sounds without any sign of Roman Reigns and Strowman is immediately looking to finish off the Universal Champion as the announcers talk about Braun still being emotional from a week ago. Moments into the brawling opener, "The Fiend" turns the tide and blasts Strowman with Sister Abigail out of nowhere. He covers him but Strowman's doesn't stay down for three.
Moments later, with no Reigns in sight as of yet, "The Fiend" puts Strowman through an announce table. He goes under the ring and pulls out a big comical over-sized clown mallet and is looking to do anything but perform a Gallagher comedy act. No watermelons are anywhere in sight. Instead, Wyatt looks to crack Strowman's head open like a smashed watermelon, however Strowman blasts "The Fiend" before he can.
The two continue to brawl around the ringside area until "The Fiend" again goes for the over-sized mallet, this time blasting Strowman with it and then moaning out like a psychopath. In keeping with that vibe, "The Fiend" grabs Strowman by the head and snaps it violently in one quick motion, ala a broken-neck / death-spot in a kung fu movie. Picture if Frank Dux didn't accept the main bad guy's submission in the Bloodsport movie and went all the way.
Anyways, it didn't snap Strowman's neck and thankfully did not end his life, as Strowman appears to be anything but dead now as he recovers and takes over. Strowman is now the one delivering punishment as these two brawl up the entrance way to the top of the stage. Strowman spears "The Fiend" off of it and they go crashing through tables and stuff laying around down below.
Strowman doesn't stay down long off the bump, as he is semi-quick to get back up and go back to work on "The Fiend." Replays are shown of the spear off the stage. The two start to brawl again as they fight down towards the ringside area again. Back in the ring now, Strowman is looking to head up to the top rope.
"The Monster Among Men" is on the top-rope now looking to finish off "The Fiend" with a high spot, however Wyatt recovers and goes up the ropes after Braun. He ends up hitting a superplex that breaks the ring upon the two big boys colliding with the mat on the way down. The ring collapses ala Brock Lesnar / Big Show several years ago.
It is at this point that the theme song of Roman Reigns hits and out he comes with Paul Heyman, finally signing the contract before heading into the ring with a chair. Reigns looks to score a cheap and easy pin, but the referee was taken out when the ring collapsed. Another ref sprints down to the ring, but now "The Fiend" is showing signs of life.
Reigns blasts the living hell out of "The Fiend" with a steel chair over-and-over-and-over again after avoiding being finished off by a momentary claw applied by Wyatt, low-blowing his way out and then blasting an oncoming Strowman with a spear. 1-2-3. We have a new WWE Universal Champion, just as the spoiler he gave promised.
Winner and NEW WWE Universal Champion: Roman Reigns
