It's time for our first match of the evening here at the ThunderDome inside of Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida.
Our first of four title bouts will kick things off inside the squared circle this evening.
WWE Women's Tag-Team Championships
Charlotte Flair & Asuka (c) vs. Nia Jax & Shayna BaszlerThe panel then sends things down to Tom Phillips, Byron Saxton and Samoa Joe, who will be calling the upcoming match here on the Kickoff Show.
On that note, the bell sounds and out comes Nia Jax and Shayna Baszler. The challengers make their way down to the ring for the first of four championship matches scheduled for tonight's show.
Now we head backstage for a live pre-match interview with Asuka and Charlotte Flair. From there, Asuka makes her entrance followed by Charlotte Flair. The bell sounds and we're off-and-running with our first match of the evening.
Baszler and Flair kick things off for their respective teams. The two hit the mat and trade holds and takedowns as the commentators talk about the irony of them starting off this match as they were the final two participants in last year's women's Rumble match.
Flair starts to take control of the action, however Baszler starts fighting her way back into the bout. She tags in Jax. Jax and Charlotte go at it and we see "The Queen" start to use her speed and agility to pull ahead into the offensive lead. She hits a running knee-lift on Jax in the corner and then tags in Asuka.
Asuka comes in and is immediately blasted by Jax. Jax follows up with a big clothesline and then tags in Baszler, who comes in and stomps on the arm of Asuka, focusing her attack on the limb of one-half of the reigning champs as this match starts to develop. Now she tweaks the arm by yanking back on it in a submission hold.
"The Emporer" fights back to her feet but Baszler immediately clotheslines her back down and covers her for a near fall. She leans over from there and tags in Jax. Jax, much like Baszler, comes in and stomps on the arm of Asuka that the challengers have been focusing on.
Asuka hits a spinning back-fist and starts fighting her way back into the contest. Jax ends up slowing down her momentum and sets her on the top-rope, as she follows up after her. Asuka ends up leaping over Jax and hitting a sunset flip on the big lady. Jax takes over from there and levels Asuka for a near fall that Charlotte breaks up.
Now Charlotte desparately calls for Asuka to make the tag, and she finally does. Jax tags out as well. "The Queen" takes the hot tag and immediately goes to work on Baszler. She starts to dominate "The Queen of Spades" and then Jax tries to interfere. Charlotte gets her and Baszler both down and hits a double Natural Selection before covering the legal woman, Baszler. She somehow finds a way to kick out before the referee's count of three.
The commentators talk about how few people can say they have kicked out of the Natural Selection as Baszler and Jax hit some double-team offense to turn things into their favor. Baszler tags Jax in and Jax dominates Charlotte for a moment before tagging Baszler right back in. Baszler hits a running knee to the jaw of Flair and covers her, however she kicks out at two. We see Jax looking up to no good and then Asuka comes running around the ring and leaping off the steel steps to take her out.
Baszler notices this and hits the floor where she dumps Asuka over the commentary table. She and Jax turn around to see Flair coming off the top-rope with a moonsault to the floor. She rolls Baszler back into the ring and as she does, her father Ric Flair's music hits and out he comes strutting and "WOO'ING!" which distracts her. Baszler rolls her up from behind but only gets two on the pin attempt. Charlotte levels Baszler with a big boot and then notices Lacey Evans hopping on the ring apron on the opposite side of the ring.
Charlotte turns and slaps the Figure-Four leg lock on Baszler. Lacey distracts her again and this time Charlotte lets go of the hold and decks Lacey. Ric Flair walks over and hands Lacey a foreign object, which she uses to knock out Charlotte. Nia Jax tags in and hits a running leg drop and covers her for the pinfall victory. We have new WWE Women's Tag-Team Champions.
