The SBJ website wrote the following about WWE SummerSlam 2021:

SBJ AWARDS NOMINEES NOTES: WWE SummerSlam 2021

“Last summer’s WWE SummerSlam event in Las Vegas — the first at an NFL stadium and the first full-capacity event at Allegiant Stadium — had over 51,000 fans in attendance, making it the largest indoor attendance for the event and the WWE’s most-attended event of 2021. That turnout quickly convinced the WWE to return to Allegiant on Fourth of July weekend 2022, setting up a second event — Money in the Bank — at the Raiders’ home venue. The return of John Cena and Brock Lesnar helped SummerSlam break multiple records, including becoming the most-viewed and highest-grossing SummerSlam in WWE history. WWE President and CRO Nick Khan also cited the event as a successful execution of their decision to move some pay-per-view to Saturday nights.”

Last year's WWE SummerSlam pay-per-view took place from Allegiant Stadium in Paradise, Nevada on August 21, 2021.

The special premium event featured a headline bout of Roman Reigns vs. John Cena for the WWE Universal Championship.

Supporting the main event were co-featured bouts such as Bobby Lashley vs. Bill Goldberg for the WWE Championship, Edge vs. Seth Rollins, as well as the surprise return of Becky Lynch against Bianca Belair.

WWE tweeted a brief statement via their official WWE Public Relations Twitter feed regarding last year's SummerSlam pay-per-view being included in the 2022 SBJ Awards Nominations for the "Event of the Year."

"WWE is pleased to have SummerSlam named as a finalist for Sports Event of the Year for the prestigious SBJ Awards," they wrote in the tweet posted on Monday afternoon. "Emanating live from Allegiant Stadium, the event became the most-viewed and highest-grossing SummerSlam in the company's history."

The 2022 Sports Business Awards are scheduled to take place on May 18 from the New York Marriott Marquis in New York, NY.
