AEW star Chris Jericho's status was a hot topic of discussion beginning late last year when it was believed he was headed towards free agency with an eye towards returning to WWE in what may have been a farewell retirement tour. Ultimately though Jericho never showed up in WWE and instead made his return to AEW last week at Dynamite in his hometown of Winnipeg, Manitoba.
Speaking to Jonathan Coachman and Vince Russo, AEW President Tony Khan was asked about Jericho's return to AEW as well as the possibility that he could leave for WWE:
"I can’t say with any certainty. I do know that Chris had a choice, and he wanted to be in AEW. He would be the best person to ask. But I know that I’ve been in communication with Chris. He told me he definitely wanted to be in AEW and very specifically in Winnipeg on that date. We’ve had that circled for a long time going back to last year."
"It was a choice that Chris made, rather being in AEW than wrestling anywhere else, and I think that’s awesome. So I can’t say for sure Coach exactly what his mind was or what he was thinking but he definitely has been consistent that he loves AEW and that he wants to be here and I’m glad he chose to be in AEW and that’s a choice he made because he was a free agent."
It has since been reported by Dave Meltzer of f4wonline.com that Jericho returning to WWE isn't going to happen any time soon and may in fact be dead forever, which would imply that the legend will wrap up his career in AEW.
