Backstage News On AEW’s Decision To Put The World Title On MJF

MJF, the reigning AEW World Champion, currently faces several top contenders vying for a chance to challenge him for his title ahead of AEW Revolution on Sunday, March 15. He is set to defend his championship against “Hangman” Adam Page, following recent matches involving Bandido and Brody King.

According to Dave Meltzer on the latest edition of Wrestling Observer Radio, the current booking direction was influenced by Page having defeated MJF twice last year. This outcome was part of the plan when MJF took time off to pursue his movie career. Meltzer noted that AEW President and CEO Tony Khan did not want Page to lose the title to MJF due to those past victories. Instead, MJF was scheduled to become the champion with Samoa Joe acting as a buffer in the storyline, which supports their long-term planning.

Meltzer explained that Joe would be the one to defeat Page through interference and other tactics, which was a central component of this storyline. MJF later won a four-way match, meaning he has never actually defeated Page, and this sets up the expectation that Page will remain undefeated until he gets a chance to face MJF.

Additionally, Meltzer mentioned that other contenders, such as Andrade and Kenny Omega, have remained active in the title picture, both continuing to gain momentum through high-profile matches. He emphasized that Andrade's recent victories over Swerve Strickland and Omega are particularly significant.
