Backstage Update On John Cena's Appearance At WWE Backlash 2026

As previously reported, WWE legend and 17-time World Champion John Cena is set to make an appearance at WWE Backlash in Tampa, Florida, this coming weekend. Cena recently announced on his Twitter (X) account that he has some “history-making” news to share with fans at Backlash.

Dave Meltzer noted on the latest episode of Wrestling Observer Radio that he is unsure of Cena's role at Backlash, especially since Cena has stated that he will never wrestle again. Meltzer also mentioned that WWE has signed Cena to a contract that includes a number of appearances, making this one of those scheduled appearances. He expressed that it's somewhat unusual for Cena to return so soon after WrestleMania, where his participation was meant to be notable.

Furthermore, Meltzer commented that having a big name like Cena come back so quickly raises questions about the reasoning behind it. However, he believes that WWE views Cena as an important figure, and getting him on television is a priority. He also highlighted that Cena is under contract as a WWE Ambassador following his retirement match against GUNTHER last December.
