The Rock is teaming up with A24 again, but this time it’s a psychological thriller.
According to an exclusive report from Deadline on Wednesday, the Final Boss is set to co-star in Breakthrough, a psychological thriller that marks his second collaboration with the acclaimed indie studio. The project is being produced and financed by A24.
The script is being written by Zeke Goodman, though no director has been attached yet. Casting is currently in progress for the film’s lead and other supporting roles.
Set in Southern California during the late ’90s and early 2000s, Breakthrough centers on a troubled young man who falls under the spell of a charismatic self-help guru. But behind the guru’s magnetic persona lies a darker, more manipulative side. Johnson is set to play that guru in a key supporting role.
This film follows Johnson’s first project with A24 — Benny Safdie’s The Smashing Machine, a drama slated for release in October.
