Welcome to Saturday Night's Main Event !
Welcome one and all to Rajah.com's live results coverage of the next iteration of WWE's Saturday Night's Main Event. Tonight's event airs live from the Yuengling Center in Tampa, Florida. There are five matches scheduled for tonight's program, which should air both on NBC and Peacock, starting at 8pm Eastern. That'll be 7pm for you Centralists, 6pm for our Mountaineers, and 5pm for the other coasties.
Tonight's card will see United States Women's Champion Zelina Vega in a championship rematch against the former, and longest-reigning US Women's Champ in history, Chelsea Green. Also up for grabs is the World Heavyweight Championship, as Jey Uso defends against Logan Paul. In what should be a physical showdown, Damian Priest will take on Drew McIntyre in a Steel Cage match. Also on tap for tonight, in tag team action, will be CM Punk & Sami Zayn teaming up against Seth Rollins & Bron Breakker. And in what should be an interesting match, R-Truth looks to beat some hustle, loyalty, and respect into his childhood hero--Undisputed WWE Champion John Cena in non-title action.
We'll have all this and more tonight at 8pm Eastern! Happy Memorial Day weekend!
Saturday Night's Main Event Live Results
Show Intro
I think that's Jeremy Borash providing narration as we see Damian Priest, Drew McIntyre, and others arrive at the arena and backstage. Chelsea Green gets a pretty solid pop, as does R-Truth. My Closed Captions think this is someone named Michael. Maybe so, maybe not--one of you will scream at me in the comments and I'll correct it then. We get the same SNME vignette we had at the last event, with retro 80's music and graphics interspersed with old clips from SNME past. We eventually return to the arena for pyro and an appearance by Jesse "the Body" Ventura. His last outing on SNME was received very well. Ventura hypes the steel cage match between Priest & McIntyre, then makes a weird crack about Mike Tyson taking a dive when they discuss Logan Paul's match. We then see Michael Cole & Pat McAfee on commentary. They hype Tampa Bay. Time for our first match 7 minutes after show start.
Tag Team Match: Seth Rollins & Bron Breakker w/ Paul Heyman vs CM Punk & Sami Zayn
At 8:07pm, Seth Rollins & Bron Breakker begin their entrance, accompanied by WWE Hall of Famer Paul Heyman. At 8:09pm, Sami Zayn comes out first to an okay pop. Wake up, Tampa, it's a PLE. CM Punk is out last at 8:10pm to a more appropriate pop. He reaches the ring, looks at Sami Zayn and nods, and all four men clash. There's been no bell. Seth is sent from the ring first, followed by Bron to a good pop. Punk heads outside the ring to stalk Rollins. The ref calls for the bell at 8:12pm as Zayn & Breakker are left in the ring. Breakker takes control early on, and within the first sixty seconds of our match start hits a huge flying clothesline attack to Zayn on the commentary table. We go to break at 8:13pm. What the actual heck? I have to watch commercials? I forgot. Damn you, NBC network simulcast!
We're back from break at 8:16pm. Breakker & Rollins have maintained control throughout the commercial break. Breakker uses shoulder thrusts on Zayn until the ref warns him; Rollins fires off some cheap shots while the ref is distracted warning Breakker. Rollins and Breakker work together to isolate Zayn on their side of the ring, wisely keeping him from the fresh Punk. Breakker takes his time, slowing the pace as he taunts Zayn before bringing Rollins back in. The crowd woke up and rips off a loud "let's go, Sami" chant. Zayn sends Breakker over the top ropes and makes the hot tag at 8:17pm. He hits the ring hot, dropping Rollins with clotheslines and a neckbreaker before ripping off his shirt to a big pop. Punk calls for the Go-to-Sleep (GTS). Rollins escapes but runs right into a kick from Rollins. Punk with a Code Red for a close cover attempt!
Punk charges Rollins and hits a running knee to the jaw in the corner. Breakker enters the ring and is dropped by Punk with a clothesline who also hits a Bulldog on Rollins. Punk climbs the turnbuckles and hits an elbow drop on Rollins for another two. We're reminded Punk is old AF when Cole tells us Punk was at the 2007 SNME. Rollins recovers and rallies, hitting a Pedigree on Rollins at 8:18pm. Zayn makes the save! Breakker enters the ring and begins to lay into Zayn while the crowd loudly barks for him. Breakker sends Zayn onto the apron but is suckered in by Sami and dumped to the outside. Sami executes a seated-springboard top-rope moonsault to wipe out Breakker and send us to a commercial break at 8:19pm! Ads I wish I got: Billy Mays telling me if I buy Oxi-clean I should wait as there's more, JG Wentworth (it's my money and I want it now, after all), Ms. Cleo trying to tell me my future, and shake weight.
We're back from break at 8:23pm. CM Punk & Seth Rollins are slugging it out in the ring as the crowd cheers for Punk. Punk looks for a GTS but Rollins escapes. Rollins fires off a Stomp but Punk evades it and both men wipe each other out with lariats in the middle of the ring to a pop. Both men crawl to their corners and make simultaneous hot tags. Zayn looks for a Blue Thunder Bomb but Breakker escapes and attempts a suplex. Sami escapes and hits a rope-assisted DDT to a big pop. Sami posts up in the corner and calls for a Helluva Kick but Rollins distracts him. Punk dives over the ropes to wipe out Rollins and Sami uses an Exploder Suplex to drop Breakker. Zayn again posts up for a Helluva Kick but Heyman distracts him. The ref and Zayn are distracted by Heyman when--oh my god, returning very early from injury, it's "Big" Bronson Reed! Reed demolishes CM Punk to a big reaction. Off the distraction, the heels pick up the win at 8:25pm!
Your Winners, Seth Rollins & Bron Breakker! (13 minutes)
After the match, Reed and Rollins stare face-to-face. They have an extensive history and the crowd pops as they seem to be ready to possibly brawl. Instead the hug to a huge reaction from crowd and Heyman! Reed wipes out Punk as he enters the ring. Reed then hits a Tsunami on the vulnerable Punk to a huge reaction. Reed, Rollins, and Breakker stand strong with Rollin's foot on a defeated Punk.
Women's United States Championship Match: Zelina Vega(c) vs Chelsea Green w/ the Secret Hervice
After a quick backstage interview with a hoarse-voiced Chelsea Green, we get the former champ's entrance at 8:29pm before heading to a commercial at 8:30pm. We return at 8:34pm Eastern and get the entrance for our champ, Zelina Vega, at 8:36pm after a quick promo for the upcoming Money in the Bank (June 7th, Los Angeles) and a recap of what we just saw at the end of our first match. Vega gets a decent pop as she skips her way out. We get our bell at 8:37pm. This is her first title defense, and she's 4-0 against Chelsea Green (credit to the WWE graphics team for the facts.) As soon as the bell rings, Green and Vega clash. Green comes out the gate aggressive, quickly taking it to the champ. Vega rallies pretty fast, using a head-scissors takedown to position Green on the ropes for a 619 attempt. Green escapes and flees outside. Vega pursues but eats a Powerbomb onto the stiff exterior floor. Green rolls Vega in and covers for a two.
Green begins to work over Vega, slamming her face into the mat before taunting her. Green with a big slap to drop the champ to one knee. We're reminded that Green won the Women's US title at the last Saturday's Night Main Event in a tournament finale. Green resorts to working holds to wear down the champ. The crowd tries to rally the champ, but Green sends her back to the mat and slaps on another chin lock hold. Again the crowd tries to support the champ. Vega begins to throw body-blows to Green, finally gaining separation. Green with a Big Boot to drop Vega. Green begins to stomp Vega in the corner until the ref warns her. The Secret Hervice--Alba Fyre and Piper Niven--are shown supporting their leader. Vega begins her comeback sequence, kipping up and taking the challenger into the corner. Vega escalates and hits a Back Stabber on Green. The Ref is distracted by Alba Fyre, allowing Piper Niven--who Pat called Doudrop, her dead name--to rip Vega off the top. Green fails to capitalize, however, as Vega very quickly rallies to put things away with a Code Red outta nowhere at 8:42pm. That felt sudden.
Your Winner AND STILL Women's United States Champion, Zelina Vega! (5 minutes)
I Probably Shouldn't Call This Filler Content
We head to break at 8:43pm. We return at 8:47pm and get Michael Cole narrating an ad for WWE Fanatics games or the such in NYC. We then see Bushwhacker Luke & Jimmy Hart in the crowd. Cole & McAfee hype yet another weekend doubleheader--in two weeks it's NXT/AAA/WWE Worlds Collide as well as the Money in the Bank! We're treated to clips of AAA's Vikingo and see El Hijo del Vikingo in the crowd to a nice pop. At 8:50pm, we get a vignette hyping John Cena's heel turn ahead of our next match. Seriously, they're taking like 15 minutes between matches for a broadcast network show. Ain't nothing premium about this live event, you know what I mean? I feel this is a good time to take a moment to speak to you, Dear Reader. How have you been? It's been a while since I've had to kill so much time filling up space. Gosh...the last time was I think during that last Roman Reigns 12-minute entrance.
Hey, you remember those very lengthy Reigns entrances we got, especially after the pandemic? That was wild. Bro was like "Undertaker thinks his entrance is long? Hold my beer, Wiseman." Oh my god, wait what, we're going to another commercial break at 8:53pm. Well, shit. These ads aren't even interesting in the slightest bit. No eye candy. No catchy jingles. Just...boring. Oh, oh so boring. Do you know how boring these ads are? I imagine they're as boring as reading this Filler Content section. Hmm, I should redact that. I'm not totally sure The Powers That Be read my results all the time, but perhaps I should redact that. Oh shit, wait, how do I redact again? I feel it's called something else. Hmm. This is HTML we're talking about here. You know, the grandfather of website coding. The elderly grandfather, on life support, in a nursing home in very small southern town known for power outages. Oh look, we're back at 8:57pm. Michael Cole hypes Dude Wipes.
Singles Match: Undisputed WWE Champion John Cena vs R-Truth
I swear this match is coming. Eventually. It's on that whole Veer/Raw path. Thank goodness, we get the opening tones to Cena's theme at 8:58pm. It's finally time for wrestling on our wrestling program! The crowd loudly chants "John Cena sucks" in timing with his theme. As he has since WrestleMania, Cena gives us nothing--just his music and his slow walk to the ring. No pyro, no fancy lighting or video effects. When he gets to the ring at 9pm, he calls for his music to be cut and demands Lillian Garcia reintroduce him as the Greatest of All Time, the never before seen seventeen, and reminds us this is his final match in Tampa. At 9:01pm, Ron Cena makes his entrance! R-Truth comes out to Cena's theme, rocking old-school red-colored John Cena gear to a big pop! He's doing the entire Cena entrance, folks, complete with a towel and hustle-run to the ring! He works the crowd, doing Cena's old entrance completely! At 9:02pm, Cena angrily clotheslines R-Truth and we get our bell!
The crowd wakes the heck up for this one, folks, and their chants are LOUD. Dueling "John Cena rocks/John Cena sucks" chants fill the Yuengling Center as Cena begins to take control early on. Cena pulls of "Ron Cena's" earrings and throws them aside. Another voluminous dueling chant, this time stating "you can't wrestle/yes he can." Truth begins to rally at 9:04pm, executing Cena's comeback sequence! Move for move, Truth executes the classic Cena comeback sequence to a massive pop. Truth with a Five Knuckle Shuffle for another big pop! Truth with an Attitude Adjuster and covers for a two! The action spills outside as Truth pursues the champ. Again, this is non-title action. Cena attacks Truth and sends him into the ring. Cena grabs a steel chair but trades it out for the title belt and threatens to hit Truth with it despite the ref's warning. Cena is about to clock Truth with it when he pauses upon seeing Truth's shocked face. Truth implores his childhood hero to return to his good ways. Cena hands the belt to the ref, choosing good...then kicks Truth in the nuts when the ref's not looking. Cena quickly puts this away at 9:07pm! After the match, Cena clocks Truth with the title and walks out after calling for his music to be cut off again. Wow, nearly twenty minutes of ads and video for a five minute match. That tracks.
Your Winner, John Cena! (5 minutes)
Totally Not More Filler
We get promos for this at 9:08pm. Then we go to a commercial break at 9:10pm but return at 9:15pm. Jey Uso runs into John Cena backstage. Uso taunts Cena as he eliminated him at the Royal Rumble. Cena tells Uso that if a YouTuber were to defeat Uso for his title, it would ruin wrestling, and then smirks and tells Uso he'll be watching closer. We see Leilani Kai in the crowd, who completed in the first-ever women's WrestleMania match. Tatanka is shown to a nice pop in the crowd, and Jesse Ventura joins commentary briefly to revisit the SNME from Tampa in 1986. Ventura reflects on, at that event, he pulled commentary, fought a mask, and returned to commentary in the same night. As Lillian Garcia tries to give our official rules for steel cage matches, Ventura just won't shut the heck up and constantly talks over her until someone clearly makes him stop.
Steel Cage Match: Drew McIntyre vs Damian Priest
At 9:18pm, Drew McIntyre begins his entrance. Damian Priest is out next two minutes later. We're reminded of their recent history, with both men costing each other quite a lot. Priest enters the cage and is attacked as soon as he does at 9:22pm. The match isn't officially under way until both men are in the cage and the door is shut. Drew sends Priest into the ring, gets a steel chair, and closes the cage to start the match . Drew begins to chop and strike Priest, battering him across the ring. Drew tries to send Damian face-first into the steel cage but Priest blocks it. McIntyre continues to control for the opening minutes and we head to break at 9:23pm. We return at 9:27pm and find McIntyre is still in control and trying to escape. Both men continue to battle, briefly, with Priest finally getting some offense in.
Priest attempts to escape the cage but Drew follows him, standing on the top rope. McIntyre pulls Priest down and hits a Superplex off the top rope. McIntyre gets a big pop and posts up in the corner, calling for a Claymore. The crowd very loudly counts down with him and he executes--and connects! Drew covers but Damian gets the shoulder up just in time. The crowd rips off a loud "this is awesome" chant. Priest and McIntyre rise to their feet at the same time and begin exchanging blows. Priest attempts a Claymore on McIntyre but Drew dodges a bullet. The crowd is eating this up as both big men start with slow, powerful blows before escalating to rapid-fire strikes. Priest with a big right that rocks the Scottish Psychopath. Priest grabs the ropes to avoid a running Claymore attempt. McIntyre rallies and hits a South of Heaven (chokeslam, it's just a chokeslam, Cole) on Priest and covers for two.
Drew grabs the chair he brought in earlier and begins to work over Priest. We're reminded that this is a no-DQ match (duh). Drew smacks Priest multiple times then drops the chair. He stands over Priest, watching him silently, almost stalking him. Drew laughs and plays to the crowd before pulling Priest up to his feet and into the corner. Drew's got the chair wedged and, in shades of their match at WrestleMania, looks for a Claymore on Priest's head as it's wedged against the chair. Drew fires off the Claymore but Damian dodges it! Priest recovers and hits a South of Heaven chokeslam but doesn't cover Drew. He positions the steel chair under Drew's head then heads to the corner. Priest grabs the chair that was wedged in the corner and walks over, thinking of a One-Man Con-chair-to. Priest does it! Cole reminds us this is the same move Priest used to take out Edge several years ago! Priest wastes more time, then finally walks over to the cage and walks out. He starts down the stairs but pauses before finally stepping on the ground at 9:34pm, winning the match as officials check on McIntyre. Ventura does not like that Priest just walked out the cage, haha. "That's not fair!"
Your Winner, Damian Priest! (12 minutes)
Less Calories, More Fillering
We go to commercial at 9:36pm and return at 9:41pm. We're treated to a video package hyping Saturday night's main event championship match. We're shown Barry Windham & Mike Rotunda in the audience! RIP Bray Wyatt. This match is coming soon. Like Veer.
World Heavyweight Championship Main Event Match: Jey Uso(c) vs Logan Paul
Jey Uso makes his way out. We go to commercial break, again. Yes, already. We return and Logan Paul makes his way out at Lillian gives the official announcements. I think they realized they're low on time. At 9:50pm, we get our bell and our main event is off. Both men circle and lock-up. Jey drops the challenger with a stiff shoulder. Jey takes control early on, getting the crowd to Yeet with his strikes. Logan strikes the champ and sends him outside. Logan stalks Jey and executes a crossbody over the top, wiping out the champ and sending us to another commercial break at 9:51pm. I do not get paid enough for this. We return at 9:54pm to find Logan in control, momentarily, but Jey begins to rally. Uso with a big running strike on Paul in the corner, covering for two. Uso heads up top for an Uso Splash but Logan rolls through, nearly pinning the champ. Paul yells at the ref, claiming it was a slow count.
Logan pulls Uso up on his shoulders and hits a roll-through driver. Paul pops back up and hits dropping knees on Uso. Logan goes for a clothesline but Uso ducks under and hits a pop-up Samoan Drop for a close cover at 9:56pm. Uso allows Paul to his feet and wraps him up from behind in the corner. Paul hangs onto the turnbuckle cover, and its ripped off when Uso yanks him out of the cover. The middle turnbuckle is exposed. Paul and Uso continue to jockey for control. Paul looks for a Slingshot Lariat but Uso catches him with a Superkick mid-move! Uso covers for a two. Uso watches as Logan is slow to rise. Uso charges in but Uso redirects him into the exposed turnbuckle. Looks like his shoulder eats the brunt of the impact. Paul with a big right hand, covering for two. Uso drops Logan and heads up top, hitting a Frog Splash for a two count. The crowd erupts as John Cena hits the ring! Cena attacks the ref then begins laying into Jey Uso! But wait, there's more--Cody Rhodes returns! Rhodes hits the ring for a massive pop and hits the Cross Rhodes on Cena! Paul gets brass knuckles but Jey hits a Spear on Paul. Uso heads up to and hits the Frog Splash on Paul, covering for the win a 10pm!
Your Winner AND STILL World Heavyweight Champion, Jey Uso! (10 minutes)
Cody's Challenge
A fired-up Cody gets on the mic, addressing a retreating John Cena & Logan Paul. "You ruined enough! I'm sorry but the John Cena farewell tour rode right through Rhodes Country and I'm ready to fight!" He then challenges Cena & Paul to a tag match against Cody and Jey Uso at Money in the Bank in two weeks. Our program goes off the air.
