After taking a couple months off following his loss to both Roman Reigns and Daniel Bryan during a Triple Threat Match at WrestleMania 37 for the WWE Universal Championship, Edge made his return to WWE television for the Friday, June 25th, 2021 edition of WWE Friday Night SmackDown.
During this week's 6/25/21 edition of WWE Friday Night SmackDown's main event segment, current WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns headed to the ring alongside Paul Heyman to address the stage of the Universal Championship after what happened at Hell in a Cell. Reigns stood in the center of the ring with a smug look crossing his face as his "Special Counsel", Paul Heyman, ran down a list of WWE Superstars that Reigns successfully defeated during his latest run as champion. Following the lengthy list, which didn’t seem to leave any names big enough for Reigns to concern himself with, it seemed we were in store for some kind of announcement.
Paul Heyman began,
"The Fiend got frightened. Strowman got slaughtered. Kevin got KO'd. Edge and Daniel Bryan got pinned, stacked, emasculated, neutered at WrestleMania, and shipped off. Daniel Bryan was man enough to come back and he got shipped right back out. Cesaro got clobbered, then the Mysterios got launched, literally, figuratively, metaphorically, straight to hell, and their cell is watching Roman Reigns from their hospital beds."
Heyman then continued on to state,
"In less than a year Reigns has wiped out the entire division, so your Tribal Chief is going to have to change course a little bit here in something that's never been done on network television before..."
However before an announcement could be made, the familiar sound of The Rated-R Superstar's entrance theme sounded over the speakers inside the ThunderDome and Edge quickly made his way to the ring where he reestablished himself as the top contender for Reigns' championship title. Edge then dismantled Reigns, then slammed the champ's face into the announcer's table. At one point, Reigns' cousin Jimmy Uso attempted to interject only to be speared through the barricade at ringside.
Edge then returned to his feet and headed back towards Reigns who had already fled the ringside area and was standing midway up the ramp towards the stage. On that note, Edge kneeled in the center of the ring and shouted out to Reigns, "You wanted me, I'm right here!" to end the Friday, June 25, 2021 edition of WWE Friday Night SmackDown.
The WWE Money in the Bank pay-per-view event is set to be one of the first WWE shows to take place back in front of fans LIVE in the Ft. Worth, Texas arena on July 18th, 2021.
